Arriyana Bracero's journey from the hardwood at Florida Southern to the world of custom art and design is fueled by the same energy that made her a standout guard: creativity, grit, and heart. As a student-athlete, she learned to balance the demands of basketball and academics, finding a second passion in painting and sneaker culture that would eventually shape her career.
Today, Bracero runs a growing design business focused on custom sneakers and creative commissions of all kinds. "Sneakers are my main thing—I've always been a sneakerhead—but I love when people come to me with different ideas," she said. From hand-painted controllers to custom vinyls, she embraces new canvases with the same enthusiasm she once brought to the court.
Her artistic path is deeply tied to her athletic experience at Florida Southern, where she found both community and confidence. "Florida Southern was such a great place for me. The team culture was amazing and it really helped shape me into the person I am today," Bracero said. That foundation now supports a career that keeps expanding in unexpected and exciting ways.
Finding Her Creative Lane
Bracero's love for art began long before her business did. "I've always kind of been a creative person. I love drawing and painting, especially in school," Bracero remembered. The spark to combine art with sneakers came from watching custom artists on YouTube, whose process videos inspired her to try it herself. "They showed their whole process, and seeing that made me want to go into it. I never looked back."
Her approach to commissions is methodical and collaborative. Clients share their ideas, and she builds a digital draft before painting. "I ask what design they have in mind—theme, colors, all that—then create a mockup so they can give input or changes," she explained. Once everything is approved, she gets to work in her studio, ensuring every step is done with quality in mind. Preparation, she learned early on, is everything: "If you don't prep the shoe the right way, the art won't last."
Florida Southern Roots
The lessons Bracero learned at Florida Southern extend well beyond Xs and Os on the hardwood. She arrived on campus just as the women's basketball program entered a new era, spending her first year with Coach Betsy Harris before playing her final three under Coach Megan Dzikas. Watching Coach Dzikas grow into one of the top coaches in Division II women's basketball left a lasting impression on her.
"Her growth has been amazing," Bracero said. "She cared for us as players and as people. If we had any issues, there was no problem going to her and talking through it." That supportive environment helped Bracero find her voice, both on the court and in her art. "The experience really helped develop my game and shape who I am."
Opportunities on a Global Stage
As Bracero's business grew, so did the scale of her projects. One of her biggest opportunities came through a partnership with the custom brand Chummys, which selected her and 12 other artists to help create 750 custom Adidas Sambas for the World Cup's premium hospitality group. "It was an amazing opportunity," she said. "They sent everything I needed to my studio, and I contributed 20 pairs. Knowing they were gifted to VIP guests at the finals in New York was unreal."
The project introduced her to large-scale collaboration and tight deadlines. It also validated her place in the custom art community. "Working as a team with other artists was something I hadn't done before. It was just a really awesome experience."
Heart Over Height
Bracero's signature mantra—Heart Over Height—captures both her basketball journey and her artistic identity. "I'm considered an undersized guard, sitting at 5'1", and there were times people doubted I could play at a high level," Bracero said. That mindset inspired a competition entry with Canvas, a platform promoting custom sneaker artists. Out of over 1,000 applicants, she was selected for the top 100 and invited to an art gallery event in San Francisco, where she even met Steph Curry.
"I wanted to pay homage to all the undersized professionals who made it despite what others said," she said. Meeting Curry and sharing her story was a moment Bracero will never forget. The experience also marked a turning point for her business. "That competition was the first step up. It made me realize this could be a real career path."
Trust, Purpose, and What's Next
For Bracero, custom work is deeply personal—both for her and her clients. "I'm honored when someone hands me their possessions and puts their trust in me," she said. Some of her best projects, she added, come when clients give her full creative freedom. "That's when my best work comes out."
One of her most meaningful pieces was a pair of custom Timberlands she gifted to Val Chmerkovskiy, a professional dancer from "Dancing with the Stars." "He let me do whatever I wanted, so I centered them around his family and his love for dance," she said. Chmerkovskiy's enthusiastic response made the effort especially rewarding.
Bracero continues to expand her creative horizons while carrying the lessons of Florida Southern with her. "Basketball's been a part of my life forever, and having that underdog mentality carries into my business," she said. "It doesn't matter if the odds are stacked against you—keep pushing, keep working hard, and you're gonna make it far."
