LAKELAND, Fla. — Florida Southern College women's soccer (3-0-6, 0-0-3 SSC) battled Nova Southeastern University (5-0-3, 2-0-2 SSC) to a 1-1 tie on Saturday at Berend Field. Tonight's tie matched last year's season-high (6) in ties.
The Moccasins created five shots and three corner kicks in the first half but went into halftime trailing 1-0 after the Sharks scored a team goal at 27:36. Earlier, Florida Southern opened with pressure, earning a corner at 5:18 before
Brinley Beorlegui sent a shot wide less than a minute later.
Hayden Johnston put Florida Southern's first shot on goal in the 18th minute, and
Carly Brodsky answered at the other end with a save. After NSU went ahead on an own goal, the Mocs earned back-to-back corners in the 31st and 32nd minutes and added late attempts from
Emily Fowlkes and
Ellie Dossantos, but the score remained 1-0 at halftime.
Isabella Payne brought Florida Southern level at 59:35, scoring the equalizer to make it 1-1. Earlier, the Mocs pressed after halftime with a
Kyleigh Cilento shot, a corner kick, and three Johnston attempts, including two saved by Gretchen Duttenhofer and one off the right woodwork before Payne also hit the right woodwork. The match stayed physical through the middle and late stages, with fouls on both sides and yellow cards issued to Payne and NSU's Maja Isaksson at 84:07. Florida Southern then held through the Sharks' late pressure, as Brodsky saved shots from Genesis Hernandez and Ella Niemela before the match ended tied 1-1.
Payne scored an unassisted goal and finished with three shots, putting two on goal. Johnston led Florida Southern with four shots and three shots on goal. Brodsky played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded three saves.
