SAINT LEO, Fla. — A dominating second half led to a 4-0 victory for the Florida Southern College women's soccer team (4-0-6, 1-0-3 SSC) over Saint Leo University (3-4, 1-3 SSC) on a rainy Wednesday night.
The Mocs kept the Lions off the scoreboard through a first half in which
Carly Brodsky made two saves and the defense handled multiple set-piece chances. SLU had an early shot miss high and forced Brodsky into a save in the 12th minute, then added another shot on goal in the 25th minute that Brodsky stopped. The pressure continued with Lions corner kicks in the 23rd, 33rd and 34th minutes, while Florida Southern played through a physical stretch that included several fouls on both sides. The Mocs created their best recorded chance late, earning a corner in the 41st minute before
Tristan Raymond put a shot on goal in the 43rd that Addison Pitts saved, and the half ended tied 0-0.
Florida Southern broke open a scoreless match after halftime, scoring four times from 48:47 through 63:27 to move from 0-0 to a 4-0 advantage.
Emily Fowlkes scored first at 48:47 off a corner kick by
Sierra Spirk, and
Carli Proctor added another goal at 51:59 on a free kick by
Frankie Gatien. The Mocs kept pressure on with corner kicks at 54:45 and 55:31 before
Sierra Spirk made it 3-0 at 57:32 on another great set-piece. FSC added a fourth goal at 63:27 from an SLU miscue, then Brodsky preserved the shutout with saves in the 65th and 77th minutes. The visitors continued to press late, recording four shots and four corner kicks in a 10-second stretch at 77:27-77:37, and closed out the half with a 4-0 final score.
Fowlkes scored the game-winning goal, putting her lone shot on frame. Proctor added a goal on her only shot attempt. Spirk also scored, finishing with one shot on goal. Brodsky played all 90 minutes in goal, recorded four saves and finished with a shutout, the sixth of the season and 20th of her career.
