LAKELAND, Fla. — Florida Southern College women's soccer (1-0-2) played Spring Hill College (0-1-1) to a 1-1 tie Thursday in the home opener at Berend Field. Florida Southern outshot SHC 25-5 and put 11 shots on goal, including 13 shots in the second half.
Ellie Dossantos put the Mocs in front in the fifth minute, finishing off an
Emily Fowlkes assist at 4:31 for a 1-0 lead. Earlier in the opening flow, FSC created immediate pressure with a
Hayden Johnston shot saved, a corner kick and a Fowlkes attempt before the goal. The Mocs kept pressing through the middle of the half, with
Frankie Gatien forcing two saves and Florida Southern earning corner kicks at 18:04, 20:52 and 25:48 without adding another goal.
Carly Brodsky preserved the advantage with a save on SHC's 26:57 shot, and the Moccasins continued to generate looks from
Bria Weldon, Ally Prentice, Sierra Spirk and
Ava Hackworth during a more physical closing stretch. The Badgers hit the left woodwork in the final minute, but Florida Southern reached halftime ahead 1-0.
Florida Southern created sustained second-half pressure while ahead 1-0, but SHC equalized at 64:15 when Felicia Ajayi scored off Sofia Jimenez Garcia's assist to make it 1-1. Earlier,
Aliya Roberts forced a save at 47:03, and the Mocs followed with corner-kick opportunities at 52:08 and 57:19 while
Kyleigh Cilento, Johnston,
Sammie Markey, Dossantos and Weldon all recorded attempts during the push. Ava Bell also stopped Gatien and
Jamie Klein around the equalizer, and Brodsky answered the Badgers' later chance by saving Kristina Wilkerson's shot after back-to-back SHC corners in the 71st minute. Florida Southern kept pressing after the match was level, getting shots from
Isabella Payne, Spirk, Markey and Hackworth while earning three corners from 75:18 to 83:49, before a foul-heavy closing stretch. The game ended without another goal, leaving the match tied 1-1.
Dossantos scored the Mocs' goal and put both of her shots on frame. Fowlkes recorded an assist and added one shot. Gatien finished with four shots, including three on goal. Markey also finished with four shots.
