Zach Maggard hit the first pitch to him in the bottom of the seventh inning over the left field fence for a walk-off home run and a 3-2 Moccasin win over West Florida, giving the Moccasins a sweep of Sundays doubleheader. FSC won the first game 11-10.
Max Russell was the beneficiary of Maggards game-winning hit. He pitched a complete game, striking out 11, to improve his record to 3-0. He had blanked West Florida on three hits through five innings, but after walking two batters in the sixth, he gave up a two-run, two-out double to Dustin Lawley that put the Argonauts ahead 2-1.
The Moccasins were able to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth after Kelvin Clark led off with a single, went to second on an infield out, advanced to third on a fly ball to right field and scored on a balk by the Argonauts Daniel Vargas-Vila.
West Florida had a chance in the top of the seventh when Brandon Brewer reached on a two-out error, but Braxton Chisholm caught Jack Maternes line drive to left just in front of the fence to end the inning, setting the stage for Maggards first-pitch homer.
The home run was Maggards second of the day, as he had one of five the Moccasins hit in the first game to overcome an early 6-0 deficit. Maggard, Andrew Grutka, Trae Gore and Kyle Gibbs each hit solo homers and Wade Kirkland capped a five-run fifth inning with a two-run shot over the left field fence that proved to be the difference in the game.
Eddie Sipple survived a six-run second inning and worked five innings to get his third win without a loss. Daniel Tillman pitched the final two innings to record his fourth save.
The Moccasins, now 13-1, play their annual exhibition game against the Detroit Tigers Tuesday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. at Marchant Stadium. Wednesday night they play Findlay (Ohio) at 7 p.m. at Henley Field.
