Moccasins Win A Pair In Extra Innings At Saint Thomas

The Moccasins had to work overtime Saturday, but the extra effort paid off in the form of a pair of extra inning victories over Saint Thomas at Miami Gardens.

FSC won the first game 15-13 in 10 innings and took the scheduled seven-inning second game 3-2 in eight innings. The wins boosted the second-ranked Moccasins' record to 4-0. Saint Thomas fell to 1-3.

RBI-singles by Wade Kirkland and Tyler Benzel in the top of the 10th broke a 13-13 tie. The Moccasins had scored six in the seventh to overcome an 11-5 deficit, then added a single run in the eighth and a Zach Maggard home run in the ninth only to have the Bobcats score twice in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings. Trae Gore led off the 10th with a double and scored on Kirkland's base hit. Benzel followed with a single that brought Kirkland home.

Daniel Tillman, who came on in the ninth after the Bobcats had put two runners on base, gave up the game-tying single, but pitched a scoreless bottom of the 10th to get the win.

In the second game, Adam Miller, pinch running for Andrew Grutka who had singled, scored the go-ahead run in the eighth on an error. Patrick Szczerba, who relieved starter Eddie Sipple in the seventh, picked up the win.

The Moccasins play a non-conference game Tuesday night at 7 at Saint Leo.
