The Moccasins combined Kelvin Clark's grand slam homer with Gus Schlosser's complete game pitching effort to down Eckerd 4-2 in the second game of Saturday's Sunshine State Conference doubleheader at St. Petersburg after Eckerd won the first game 6-4.
With the doubleheader split, the Moccasins are 26-5, 6-3 in the SSC. Eckerd is 15-13, 1-8 in the SSC.
Clark's homer, his 11th of the season, came in the third inning after singles by Kyle Gibbs, Trae Gore and Colin Kaline and erased a 2-0 Eckerd lead. Schlosser improved his record to 5-2. After giving up single runs in the first and second innings, he gave up just one hit over the final five frames.
In the first game, Eckerd took advantage of three FSC errors in the final two innings to score three unearned runs. A throwing error and a dropped fly ball produced a pair of runs for the Tritons in the seventh, then an errant pickoff throw gave them another run in the eighth and a 6-4 lead.
The Moccasins loaded the bases with one out in the top of the ninth on a single by Kaline, a walk to Wade Kirkland and a Tyler Benzel single. Andrew Grutka hit a sinking line drive to right field that appeared to fall in safely. The umpire, however, ruled that right fielder Minervino Labrador made the catch and the Tritons were able to double off Benzel from first base to end the game. Jake Guengerich (1-1), who relieved starter Eddie Sipple in the sixth, took the loss.
The Moccasins get a return match with Flagler Wednesday night at 7 at Henley Field.
