The sixth-ranked Moccasins unleashed a potent offense against Barry Saturday, producing 29 runs and 36 hits in a doubleheader sweep of the Buccaneers, 12-4 and 17-6, Saturday at Miami Shores.
Saturday's two wins gave the Mocs a sweep of the three-game Sunshine State Conerence series and left FSC (30-5, 9-3 SSC) in sole possession of second place. Barry fell to 22-11 (6-6 SSC).
Every Moccasin starter had at least one hit in both games of the doubleheader.
In the first game, the Moccasins scored four runs in the first two innings and six runs in the final two. Tony Mitchell led the offensive attack with three hits. Trae Gore, Colin Kaline, Wade Kirkland, Tyler Benzel and Zach Maggard each had two hits. Gore and Kirkland each drove in two runs.
Eddie Sipple worked the first six innings on the mound to earn his sixth win in seven decisions. Tucker Pryor pitched three scoreless innings in relief to earn his first save of the season.
In the second game, Kirkland's three-run homer, his ninth of the season, helped give the Moccasins an early 4-0 lead and a five-run fifth boosted the margin to 9-1. Barry, however, took advantage of a two-out error to score five unearned runs in the bottom of the inning to trim the lead to 9-6.
The Moccasins answered with a seven-run sixth inning to put the game out of reach and Braxton Chisholm added a pinch-hit homer in the seventh for the final run.
Andrew Grutka led the offense in game two with a four-hit effort. Kelvin Clark and Benzel each had three hits, with Benzel exending his hitting streak to 11 straight games, while Kirkland, Gore and Maggard each had two hits.
Gus Schlosser struck out seven, walked three and allowed just one earned to improve his record to 6-2. He was one out away from his fourth complete game, but after Barry loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, Patrick Szczerba came on to record the final out with a strikeout.
The Moccasins play at Warner Tuesday at 3 p.m.
