The Moccasins ran into one of the best pitchers in the country Friday night and Southern Arkansas' Hayden Simpson threw a complete-game, four-hit shutout, topping the Moccasins 7-0 at the NCAA South Regional at Tampa.
Simpson improved his record to 13-1, as he struck out 11 and walked just two. Andrew Grutka had three of the Moccasins' four hits and was the only Moccasin to get as far as third base. Wade Kirkland had the Moccasins' other hit.
The Muleriders broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the fourth, added three more in the fifth and tacked on single runs in the seventh and eighth. Eddie Sipple took the loss for FSC, dropping his record to 7-4.
Southern Arkansas (45-8), the tournament's top-seeded team, advances in the winner's bracket to a 7 p.m. Saturday game against second-seeded Tampa, which defeated Valdosta State 17-7.
The Moccasins play an elimination game Saturday at 3:30 p.m. against Florida Tech, which eliminated West Florida 13-4. The first game Saturday will be at noon, matching Rollins against Valdosta State. Rollins eliminated Albany State 9-8.
A Moccasin victory over Florida Tech would put them in a noon Sunday game against the winner of the Rollins-Valdosta State game.
