Led by Michaela Hawley's 20-point, 12-rebound double-double, the Moccasins put the finishing touches on the 2011 portion of their season with a 62-51 win over Grand Valley State Thursday at Jenkins Field House.
The Moccasins will take a 9-2 record into the 2012 portion of their season. Grand Valley State slipped to 5-6.
The double-double was Hawley's second of the season and the 16th of her career. She raised her career point total to 1,421 points and her career rebounding total to 593. She is eighth on the FSC career scoring list and 12th on the FSC career rebounding list. At the free throw line, she was 10-10, improving her season free throw percentage to 85.7 (72-84).
Hawley was one of four Moccasins scoring in double figures. Megan Dzikas tossed in 12 points and delivered a season-high eight assists, plus a career-high five steals. Sofie Lundburg had a second straight strong performance off the bench, scoring 11 points, including three three-pointers. Morgan Lamberg added 10 points.
After the Lakers had three brief leads early in the game, the Moccasins took the lead for good at 10-9 on Dzikas' jumper with 13:56 left in the first half. They led 30-24 at halftime.
Grand Valley stayed close and trailed only 44-38 with 7:57 left in the game before the Moccasins went on a 13-4 run over the next 5:16 to put the game out of reach.ÂÂ
Briauna Taylor led the Lakers with 22 points and Alex Stelfox had 10. The Moccasins limited the Lakers to a 31.3 field goal percentage (20-64), marking the fourth straight game they have held their opponent under 40 percent from the field. The Moccasins shot 44.9% from the field (22-49).
The Moccasins resume play on Jan. 4 with a Sunshine State Conference home game against Eckerd at 5:30 p.m. at Jenkins Field House.
