Mocs' Second-Half Rally Falls Short Against The Tars

Box Score

A spirited second-half Moccasin rally came up short and the Moccasins dropped their Sunshine State Conference opener, 84-78, at Rollins Saturday afternoon.

The loss snapped the 22nd-ranked Moccasins' four-game winning streak, while the 25th-ranked Tars improved to 6-0.

Rollins scored the game's first five points and except for a pair of brief Moccasin leads at 8-7 and 12-10, the Tars maintained the advantage and led 38-26 at halftime. The Moccasins connected on only one of seven three-pointers and were just three of 11 from the free throw line in the first half.

After watching Rollins increase its lead to 14 points, 55-41 with 12:00 remaining, the Moccasins started to make their move. A pair of free throws by Tyler Kelly trimmed the Tars' lead to 62-56 with 8:09 to go. Less than a minute later Seth Evans sank four straight free throws, two on a personal foul and two on a Rollins technical foul, and the Moccasins were only down by five, 65-60 at the 7:19 mark.

That was as close as the Moccasins would get, however.

Freshman Kevin Capers led all scorers with a season-high 22 points before fouling out with 2:29 left. Evans tallied 16, while Dominic Lane added a career-high 15 points, all in the second half. Brett Bailey scored 10.

Rollins was led by Ian Scott, who scored a career-high 19. Also in double figures for the Tars were Jeremy Sharpe with 17, Myk Brown with 15 and Dave Diakite with 11.

FSC shot 46.7 percent from the field, was 6-20 from three-point range and made 16 of 29 free throws. Rollins shot 56.3 percent, was 7-17 on three-pointers and sank 23 of 34 free throws.

Rollins won the rebounding battle 35-28. A total of 53 fouls were called and four players, two on each team, fouled out.

The Moccasins face a rematch with Armstrong Atlantic Monday night in Savannah, Ga. FSC beat the Pirates 85-84 last Saturday in the championship game of the Terrace Hotel/Ledger Media Group Tournament on Kevin Capers' basket as time expired.
