Box Score 2 After Tony Mitchell's three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth gave the Moccasins a 5-2 win over Barton in the first game of Friday's twi-night doubleheader at Henley Field, they repeated that score behind a compete-game pitching effort from Stephen Batman in the second game to earn the sweep.
With the doubleheader sweep, the sixth-ranked Moccasins improved to 6-0. Barton dropped to 2-4.
In the first game, after three scoreless innings, the Moccasins scored twice in the fourth on an RBI-triple by Mike Snyder and a wild pitch. That lead held up until the eighth, when the Bulldogs reached Gus Schlosser for two runs to tie it on Zac Crumpler's two-out, two-run single.
The Moccasins answered in the bottom of the inning. Snyder reached on a fielder's choice and Zach Maggard singled. Patrick Sherrill relieved Mitch Frazier for Barton and Mitchell hit Sherrill's first pitch over the right field fence to give the Moccasins a 5-2 lead.
Patrick Szczerba, who recorded the final out in the eighth and the first out in the ninth, picked up his second win of the season. Schlosser worked 7.2 innings, struck out five and walked one. Eddie Sipple relieved Szczerba and retired the final two batters.
In the second game, Batman made his first start since May 16, 2009. He missed all of last season recovering from shoulder surgery.
The Moccasins gave him all the runs he needed with four in the first. Two runs scored on wild pitches and Colin Kish and Maggard singled home runs. Tyler Benzel added the Moccasins' final run with a towering home run over the left field fence to lead off the fifth.
In notching his 16th career win and seventh career complete game, Batman scattered five hits, struck out eight and walked just one.
The Moccasins and Barton complete their weekend series with a 1 p.m. single game Saturday at Henley Field.
