Mocs Trail Early, Win Late, Sweep DH

Box Score 1

The Moccasins spotted St. Thomas big early leads in each game, 8-0 in game one and 6-0 in game two, then came back to win both games in their final at-bat, 10-9 in game one and 7-6 in game two, to sweep Saturday's doubleheader at Henley Field.

Kelvin Clark's two-run single with one out in the bottom of the ninth won game one. Mike Snyder's leadoff home run in the bottom of the sixth won the seven-inning second contest.

In game one, the Moccasins fell behind 8-0 after two-and-a-half innings, but kept chipping away, scoring in each of the last five innings. Colin Kaline had a two-run double in the fifth. Tyler Benzel hit a solo homer in the sixth. A wild pitch and an infield out by Snyder produced two runs in the seventh. Colin Kish singled home two runs in the eighth to set the stage for Clark's game-winning blow. With one out, Snyder singled and Joel Frazer ran for him. Zach Maggard singled Frazer to second and Tony Mitchell walked to load the bases. Clark then belted a 2-2 pitch into left center, scoring Frazer and Maggard to cap the Moccasins' comeback.

Patrick Szczerba, who retired the final batter in the top of the ninth, picked up the pichting win. He was the fourth Moccasin pitcher, following starter Clay Chapman, Stephen Batman and Nate Carter. Batman, who missed all of last season recovering from shoulder surgery, pitched 4.2 innings in relief. He scattered three hits, gave up one unearned run, struck out two and walked two.

In game two, freshman Anthony Dovale had a rough start in his FSC debut. He didn't retire a batter, giving up six runs and seven hits in the first inning. Jake Guengerich came out of the bullpen, however, and pitched the rest of the game to get the win. He gave up just four hits, did not allow a run, struck out three and walked two. He retired the last seven St. Thomas batters in order.

The Moccasins got three runs back in the second on an RBI-double by Mitchell and a two-run single by Austin Chubb. They tied the game in the fifth on Cory Jensen's two-run triple and Jimmy Correnti's infield out that scored Jensen. Jeff Lara came out of the bullpen for St. Thomas to start the sixth and Snyder hit his second pitch over the left field fence to give the Moccasins the lead.

Off to a 3-0 start, the Moccasins play a non-league game against Saint Leo Tuesday night at 7 at Henley Field.
