Box Score 1 The Moccasins hit their way through both games of the double-header Saturday afternoon at Henley Field, as they swept Minnesota-Duluth 14-2 and 11-1. Florida Southern improves its record to 13-5, while the Bulldogs drop to 3-4.
In the first game, Duluth jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Tyler Erickson singled, advance to third on a Marcus Riewer single, and then scored on a double play.
The Mocs responded in the bottom of the third inning with a four-run rally. Austin Chubb started the inning with a single to center, advanced to second on a Cory Jensen walk. With two out Colin Kish singled to left field to score Chubb. After Mike Snyder walked to load the bases, Tony Mitchell smacked a single to left field which scored two runs. Snyder scored on a double steal with Mitchell to give the Mocs a 4-1 lead.
The Mocs added 4 runs in the fourth inning and three in the fifth to extend their lead to 12-2. In the bottom of the sixth inning Zach Maggard blasted a shot to left field for his second home-run of the series. The Mocs added one run in the eighth inning for the 14-2 final.
Stephen Batman scattered eight hits and two runs over five innings to improve his record to 2-1. Nate Carter, Mike Czenszak, Patrick Szczerba, and Jake Guengerich pitched the final four innings, allowing no hits.
Game two went much like game one, with the Moccasins jumping out to an early 3-0 lead with RBI's from Snyder and Tyler Benzel.
Colin Kaline hit his first home run of the season to start the rally in the second inning. Kish doubled to right. After a Snyder strikeout, the Mocs got back-to-back RBI doubles by Mitchell and Benzel. Maggard followed with an RBI single to give Florida Southern a 7-0 lead. The Mocs scored two in third and two in the fifth to cap their scoring.
Eddie Sipple pitched a complete game for his second win of the season. He struck out 10, allowing only five hits and one run.
The Moccasins, ranked 22nd in this week's Division II Coaches' Poll, will return to action next weekend with a three game series at Saint Leo. The single game Friday begins at 6 p.m., while the doubleheader Saturday will start at 1 p.m.
