Box Score Five Moccasin pitchers" four freshmen and a sophomore" combined to throw a three-hit shutout, as the 17th-ranked Moccasins blanked Warner, 6-0, Tuesday at Lake Wales for their 10th straight win. The shutout was the first by the Moccasin pitching staff this season.
Freshman Clay Chapman started and worked the first three innings, allowing just two hits, and was credited with the win, his third of the season without a loss. Freshman Anthony Dovale followed Chapman with three perfect innings. Nick Krolczyk pitched the seventh and kept the Royals off the scoreboard when they had runners at second and third with just one out. Sophomore Mike Czenszak threw a five-pitch perfect eighth inning and freshman Nate Carter worked the ninth to finish the game.
Tony Mitchell and Tyler Benzel had big days at the plate for the Moccasins (17-5). Mitchell was 4-5 with a home run, his fifth of the season, two RBI and three runs scored. Benzel was 3-5 with a pair of RBI. Colin Kish and Zach Maggard also had two hits apiece.
Jeff Jacobsen, the Royals starter, took the loss, dropping his record to 1-1. The Royals (19-12-1) had just one hit, a double by Bryan Langston in the seventh, after the third inning.
The Moccasins play their first Sunshine State Conference home series this weekend against Eckerd. Friday night's single game starts at 7 p.m. with Saturday's doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Highlighting Friday night's game will be the recognition of the 1981 national championship team in observance of the 30th anniversary of that title, as well as honoring former coach Joe Arnold, who led the Moccasins to the 1978 title in addition to the 1981 crown. Fans can purchase a single ticket Friday night and attend the baseball game and the Moccasins' lacrosse game, which will be played at Bryant Stadium at 7 p.m. against Lenoir-Rhyne.
