Box Score 2 Tony Mitchell went a combined 5-10, hitting two homeruns in game one and added the game-winning hit in game two as 16th ranked Florida Southern complete the three game sweep over Lynn Sunday at McCusker Sportsplex.
The Moccasins improve its record to 24-8 overall and 10-2 in the Sunshine State Conference, while Lynn falls to 19-17 and 4-8 in the SSC.
In the opening game, Lynn broke a scoreless tie in the second as Dane Derstine homered to left field to give the Knights a 1-0 advantage.
The Mocs responded in the top of the third inning scoring six runs. Colin Kish singled to lead off the inning followed by back-to-back doubles from Zach Maggard and Austin Chubb. Chubb scored on a fielding error which allowed Colin Kaline to reach second base. After Kelvin Clark flied out, Mike Snyder hit an RBI single, which scored Kaline. Mitchell hit a two-run homerun to right field to put the Mocs on top 6-1.
Lynn tied the game in the bottom of the third inning. After a hit and walk to start the inning, Anthony Boza hit a three-run homer to cut the lead to 6-4. Stephen Fernandez tied the game with a two-run, two-out triple.
The Mocs regained the lead in the fourth as Maggard doubled and scored on a Cory Jensen single to left field.
Lynn took the lead, 9-7, in the bottom of the fifth but the Mocs came back with two runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game. After Clark reached on a fielder's choice, Mitchell hit his second home run of the game to right field.
The game remained tied until the top of the eleventh inning, when the Moccasins took advantage of a Knights error to score two runs. J.J. Downum reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a Mitchell fly ball to left field which was mishandled. Benzel followed with an RBI single to left center to give the Mocs an 11-9 win.
Jake Guengerich pitched two innings allowing one hit for the win. He improved his record to 4-1. The Moccasins bullpen pitched eight innings allowing three runs on six hits.
In game two, Moccasins starter Eddie Sipple pitched six innings allowing one run on three hits to improve his record to 5-3. Anthony Dovale pitched a perfect seventh for his first save of the season.
The Mocs broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the sixth scoring two runs. After Jensen and Kaline reached based, Mitchell hit an RBI single to right field. Mitchell would score the final run of the game on a Benzel double to left field.
Benzel and Kaline had two hits in both games of the doubleheader. Maggard added three hits and scored two runs in game one.
Florida Southern hosts Palm Beach Atlantic in a three game series next weekend. Friday's night single game starts at 7 p.m., with Saturday's doubleheader set for 1 p.m.
