Box Score Florida Southern overcame a six-run deficit, but it wasn't enough as Warner hit two late-inning home runs to defeat the Moccasins 9-8 in 10 innings Tuesday night at Henley Field. With the win Warner improves its record to 22-17 while the Mocs fall to 21-8.
The Royals got the scoring started in the top of the first inning as Tyler Richardson hit a two-run home run to left field. With two outs, Justin Zanella doubled to left center, which scored Shaun Starnes who walked and stole second base. John McVey and Andy Paul each singled and scored on a Johnny Groubert RBI double, giving Warner a 6-0 lead.
The Moccasins got on the board in the bottom of the third inning as Tyler Benzel had a base loaded walk, which scored Cory Jensen. Colin Kish followed with a single to right field that scored Colin Kaline and Tony Mitchell and cut the lead to 6-3.
In the bottom of the fifth inning Mitchell hit a solo home run to left field to cut the lead to 6-4.
Warner responded in the top of the sixth inning as Starnes had an RBI single to extend the Royals lead to 7-4.
Jimmy Correnti led off the seventh inning with a walk, followed by a Jensen single. Kaline put down a bunt and then advance to third on a throwing error by the pitcher, which allowed the Mocs to score two runs. Kaline scored the tying run on a Mike Snyder single. A.J. Szatkowski had a base loaded walked to give the Moccasins an 8-7 lead.
Starnes hit a home run in the top of the ninth inning off Jake Guengerich to tie the game 8-8. Then in the top of tenth inning Groubert hit a home run to right field to give the Royals a 9-8 win.
Kish went 3-5 with two RBI's while Jensen added three hits.
The Moccasin's five relief pitchers combined for 9.1 innings pitched, allowing three runs while striking out eight.
The Moccasins will return to action this weekend when they travel to Lynn University for a three game conference series. Saturday's single game will start at 3:00 p.m., while Sunday's doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
