Hot Bats and Solid Pitching Combine for Sweep of Rollins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Florida Southern's bats in game one and Eddie Sipple'€™s pitching in game two led the 30th-ranked Moccasins to a sweep of their doubleheader with Rollins, 14-2 and 12-0, Friday at Henley Field. With the wins Florida Southern improves to 32-15 overall and 16-8 in the SSC, while Rollins falls to 27-26 and 6-18 in conference play. This marks the fourth time the Mocs swept a conference series this season.

In the first game of the doubleheader, the Moccasins scored first, pushing two runs across in the first inning. Kelvin Clark drew a two-out walk. Mike Snyder followed with a two-run homer to left field, his 10th home run of the season.

The Tars cut the deficit in half in the top of the second as Zach Persky and Brian Lattanzi had back-to-back singles. Persky would later score on a Mocs' fielding error to cut the led to 2-1.

The Mocs responded in the bottom of the second with three more runs. Tyler Benzel led off with a single, advanced to second on a Colin Kish walk, and scored on a Zach Maggard double down the left field line. Austin Chubb followed with an RBI groundout to score Kish. Cory Jensen singled to right field to score Maggard and put the Mocs on top 5-1.

That same group started the fourth inning with three straight hits, as Benzel doubled to center, Kish hit an RBI-single up the middle, and Maggard singled. Jensen followed with a two-run triple down the right field line to score Kish and Maggard. Jensen would later score on a Clark single.

The Mocs added two runs in the fifth inning to extend their lead to 11-1.

After Rollins scored one run in the top of the eighth, the Mocs responded with three more runs of their own. Colin Kaline and Clark started the inning with back-to-back singles. Joel Frazer knocked in both runners with his first career triple to right center field. He would score on an Adam Miller sacrifice fly for the 14-2 final.

Stephen Batman pitched seven innings, scattering six hits and allowing just one unearned run while striking out six Tars to improve his record to 6-3. Clay Chapman and Mike Czenszak pitched an inning in relief to finish the game.

The nightcap had a two-hour and 22-minute rain delay in the top of the first inning. Sipple walked the first batter after the delay before settling in. After pitching out of a first inning jam, the senior lefthander didn't allow another Tar to reach second base and only allowed one hit and one walk over the next five innings. Sipple improved his record to 8-4, giving up just two hits and striking out seven in six innings of work. Patrick Szczerba came in to pitch a perfect seventh inning.

The Mocs struck first in the bottom of the second inning. Kish led off with a single, then Maggard was hit by a pitch. After Jensen singled to load the bases, Kaline singled up the middle to score Kish and Maggard to give the Mocs a 2-0 lead.

The Mocs extended their lead in the bottom of the third inning. Snyder led off the inning with a walk, advanced to third on a Tony Mitchell double, and scored on a Benzel sacrifice fly. Mitchell would steal third base and score on a wild pitch to give Florida Southern a 4-0 lead.

Kish led off the bottom of the sixth with a walk. Maggard followed with a two-run homer to left field, his 34th career home run, which is one shy of Florida Southern career record. After three straight singles to load the bases, Clark hit an RBI groundout to score Chubb. Snyder followed with a two-run single up the middle. Mitchell hit an RBI-triple to center field and scored on a Benzel double. Benzel would score on a Chubb single to left field for the 12-0 final.

Every Moccasin starter reach based at least once in both games of the doubleheader. Jensen led the Mocs with five hits and four RBI€™s, while Maggard added four hits and four RBI€™s.
