WINTER PARK â€" Florida Southern’s regular season came to an end Saturday night with a loss to 15th-ranked Rollins in Winter Park. Now the Moccasins hope to get back there for another shot at the Tars next week. Rollins got goals from three different players, including two in the final 30 minutes, as the Mocs fell 3-0.
With the loss, Florida Southern fell to 6-7-3 overall and 3-3-2 in the Sunshine State Conference. The Moccasins will host a first-round game in the SSC Tournament on Tuesday night against Lynn, and will need to win that one to get back to Winter Park next week for the semifinals and championship game. Rollins (11-4-1, 7-1) earned the right to host those games by winning the SSC regular season title, and for the Mocs to get another chance at the Tars, they’ll not only need to defeat Lynn, but 2nd-seeded Tampa in the semifinals as well.
The Tars controlled most of the first half, out-shooting the Moccasins 9-4, but they could score only one goal. That came in the 21st minute when Ali Schrader sprinted down the left sideline with the ball, took it into the box, and sent her shot past Erin Moseley for her fifth goal of the season.
Earlier in the first half, the Moccasins had survived an early assault by the Tars that saw them take six shots and two corner kicks in the first seven minutes. Moseley was forced into action on two of them, and Schrader was high on another one by inches. Kelsey Boone nearly scored too but had her shot from inside the 6-yard box blocked by Brooke Williams.
Kirra Rainbow gave the Moccasins their first scoring chance in the 13th minute when she found Sarah Goolsby open behind the Rollins back line, but Goolsby had her shot from just inside the 18-yard line saved by Mary Spring. Their next shot didn’t come until Kara Moore had two from between 25 and 30 yards out midway through the period. One of those was on target but also saved by Spring and the other was just over the bar.
Rollins opened up the second half with three early shots before Brenna McKee scored on the Tars’ fourth in the 63rd minute. The sophomore forward was on the receiving end of a ball played into the box from Maddie Ginder, and though Moseley nearly made a tough save, the ball still found its way into the net for McKee’s ninth goal of the season.
The Tars finished their scoring in the 73rd minute when reserve Jessica Zogg’s shot from close range deflected off a Moccasin defender and into the net.
The Tars weren’t finished shooting, but Moseley denied them another goal with a spectacular save against Azure Dorsey in the 81st minute. It was one of six saves on the night for the sophomore goalkeeper, who faced 20 shots.
Spring made three saves for Rollins in picking up her seventh shutout of the year.
Florida Southern’s first-round game in the conference tournament on Tuesday against Lynn will kick off at 7:00 p.m. The winner advances to face Tampa on Friday at 4:30 p.m. in Winter Park.
