TALLAHASSEE - Florida Southern split its double-dual meet here Saturday afternoon with NCAA Division I Florida State and NCAA Division III Emory University at the Morcom Aquatics Center on the FSU campus.
The Moccasins, who are 2-1 on the season, fell 186-106 to the 15th-ranked Seminoles and picked up a 174.5-87.5 win over No. 1 ranked Emory.
In Saturday's meet, the Mocs claimed wins in seven of the 16 events contested, including senior multiple-time All-American Jeb Halfacre (Gainesville, Fla.) winning two of the events in his first action of the season. Other Mocs that won events were sophomore Juan Tolosa (Guipuzcoa, Spain) and senior Miguel Ferriera (Caracas, Venezuela) winning two events. In addition, the Mocs also finished first in the both the 400-medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay.
Halfacre, who is a three-time National Champion in the 200-yard backstroke, finished first in both the 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard IM. In the 100 backstroke, he swam an FSC season-best time of 50.17 and he swam the 200 IM in a time of 1:52.36. Halfacre also finished fourth in the 100-yard freestyle in an FSC season-best time of 46.02 and was a member of the Mocs winning 400-yard medley relay team that swam a season-best time of 3:19.91. Other members of the medley relay team were Ferriera, junior Jason King (Smithville, Mo.) and sophomore Luis Rojas (Caracas, Venezuela).
Ferriera, who won two events in the Mocs season opening dual meet win over Tampa, won the 100-yard breaststroke in a season-best time of 55:70 and he won the 200-yard breaststroke in a season-best time of 2:05.72 and was a member of the Mocs winning 400-yard freestyle relay team that swam a time of 3:06.33, while Tolosa finished first in the 1,000-yard freestyle in a season-best time of 9:33.07. Other members of the 400-yard freestyle relay were Rojas, sophomore Allan Gutierrez (San Pedro Sula, Honduras) and senior Stephen Swan (Snellville, Ga.).
Other strong performances on Saturday were turned in by Rojas, King, freshman Raul Garrastazu (Dorado, P.R.), junior Thomas Nguyen (Snellville, Ga.) and freshman Wei Pin Teh (Klang Selangor, Malaysia).
Rojas was on both the Mocs winning relay teams, along with swimming a team season-best time of 1:41.01 in the 200-yard freestyle to finish in third place, while King swam a season-best time of 1:52.05 in the 200-yard butterfly to finish in fourth place and finished third in the 100-yard butterfly in a season-best time of 50.55 and was fifth in the 200 IM with a season-best time of 1:56.18.
Garrastazu was fourth in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:40.52 and he was sixth in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:40.26 and was seventh in the 200-yard butterfly (1:53.59), Nguyen was second in the 200-yard backstroke with a season-best time of 1:51.32 and was sixth in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 51.73 and Teh was fourth in the 200-yard backstroke (1:52.48), seventh in the 100-yard butterfly (51.13) and seventh in the 100-yard backstroke (52.27).
The Mocs will return to action on Nov. 17 as they face Rollins in a dual meet. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in Winter Park.
