West Florida Pitching Keeps Mocs' Hitters In Check

Second-ranked West Florida came into this weekend's series with the Moccasins owning an impressive 2.40 team ERA and the Argonauts improved on it Saturday, limiting the Moccasins to two runs through 16 innings, sweeping a doubleheader, 1-0 and 12-2, at Henley Field.

The wins extended the defending national champion Argonauts' winning streak to eight straight after dropping their season opener. The Argonauts have not allowed more than three runs in a game during their winning streak  The 23rd-ranked Moccasins had their four-game winning streak halted and fell to 6-4.

West Florida's Billy O'Connor homered over the 385 sign in right center field with one-out in the top of the ninth for the only scoring in the first game.

The Argonauts' Josh Tanski and the Moccasins' Jon Jones hooked up in a scoreless pitchers' duel for eight innings, but neither was involved in the decision. Tanski left with one out in the eighth after scattering six hits and striking out five. Jones worked eight innings, also giving up six hits and striking out five. Dan Husum, who got the final two outs in the eighth, earned his third win without a loss. Bobby Parker pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his fifth save. Austin Jackson, who came on to start the ninth for the Moccasins, took the loss, dropping to 1-2.

The Moccasins' had scoring chances, as they left 10 runners stranded in the game. They loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth and had runners at first and third with two outs in the eighth, but couldn't get the hit they needed.

In the seven-inning second game, West Florida sent 10 men to the plate in a six-run first and did the same thing in the sixth. T.J. Kuban produced the Moccasins' runs with a two-run homer, his team-leading third of the season, in the third inning.

Brian Ellington worked into the fifth for the Argonauts and picked up his second win without a loss. Jake Guengerich took the loss, dropping his record to 1-2. Nick Krolczyk and Austin Barnett pitched in relief.

The two teams play a nine-inning single game Sunday at 1 p.m. at Henley Field.
