Complete-game pitching efforts by Clay Chapman and Nick Krolczyk, plus a 6-for-7 performance at the plate from Cory Jensen, helped power the Moccasins to a Sunshine State Conference doubleheader sweep of seventh-ranked Nova Southeastern, 3-2 and 9-1, at Henley Field Saturday.
Chapman went the distance in the opener, which had been suspended by rain in the first inning Friday night. It was his first collegiate complete game and boosted his record to 4-3, as he out-dueled Nova ace Zachary Westcott, who suffered his first loss in nine decisions. Chapman scattered six hits, struck out six and walked two.
The Moccasins scored first when Austin Chubb doubled and scored on a two-out error in the third. The Sharks answered with a run in the fifth on an RBI-single by Carlos Asuaje. The SSC's leading hitter at .452, Asuaje had just one hit in eight trips to the plate in the two games.
In the sixth, FSC put together four straight hits â€" a single by Keith Curcio, a double by Mike Snyder, a single by Chubb and a single by T.J. Kuban â€" to produce a pair of runs with Snyder and Chubb driving them in.
Chapman worked out of a ninth-inning jam to preserve his complete game. The Sharks' first two batters reached on a hit batsman and a walk. After a sacrifice and a pop out, a two-out Moccasin error allowed an unearned run to score before Chapman got Blake Boyd to hit into a force play at second to end the game.
Jensen and Curcio each had three hits in the game, while Snyder, Chubb and Kuban each delivered two.
Krolcyzk won for the third straight time and tossed his second straight complete game in the seven-inning second contest, improving his record to 4-0. He struck out four and walked none, while lowering his team-best ERA to 2.22.
Snyder gave him all the runs he needed with a two-run homer, his 10th of the season, in the bottom of the first. Colin Kish had a solo homer, his third, in the second before Jensen’s two-run double capped the inning. Jensen drove in his third run with his third hit in the fourth. Chubb, who also had three hits and three RBI in the game, wrapped up the Mocs’ scoring with a bases loaded double in the sixth. With his six hits for the day Jensen raised his team-leading batting average to .335.
FSC is now 23-17, 11-9 in the SSC. Nova Southeastern fell to 27-8, 8-5 in the SSC.
The two teams will conclude their series Sunday with a nine-inning single game starting at noon at Henley Field. It will be the Moccasins’ final home game of the season.
