Box Score
SAINT LEO â€" Saffron Jordan put Saint Leo ahead only seconds before the halftime whistle, then assisted a goal and scored another in the first five minutes of the second half as the Lions defeated Florida Southern 5-0 Saturday night.
The game looked as if it would make it to the half without a goal being scored, but the Lions (8-4, 3-1) changed that with 37.7 seconds on the clock. The Moccasin back line had kept a group of Lions out of the box while they possessed the ball along the 18-yard line, but after several seconds of passing and dribbling, Jordan found an opening and took the shot from 20 yards, sending it into the upper reaches of the net for her second goal of the season.
The second half had barely started and Saint Leo had scored again. Jordan looked as if she might have been shooting, but the ball she played along the ground from the top right side of the 18-yard box was actually perfect for a sliding shot by Ari Foreman running on to it at the back post. That came exactly one minute into the second half and it was goal number five on the season for Foreman.
Jordan then made it a 3-0 game four minutes later with a 30-yard free kick that was unstoppable as it carried into the top left corner of the net.
The Lions would close out the scoring with two more goals in the 75th and 80th minutes. The first of those came from reserve Stephanie Marran, who somehow scored from the far left side of the field when she got the ball into the top right corner of the net. The shot came from a tough angle too, and FSC goalkeeper Erin Moseley (Jacksonville, Fla.) batted it away, but the ball was ruled to have already crossed the goal line before it came out.
National scoring leader Arielle Kabangu then scored for the 16th time this season for the final goal of the night, dribbling in one-on-one with Moseley.
The Saint Leo defense held Florida Southern (2-9-3, 1-4) to seven shots, and Abby Evans needed to make only one save on a header by Margot Chowansky (Califon, N.J.) in the 89th minute.
The Moccasins came even closer to scoring in the 67th minute when it was still a 3-0 game. It came on a free kick played by Kara Moore (Fleming Island, Fla.) into the box for Jackie Metz (Vero Beach, Fla.), who just missed her first goal of the season. Instead, her header glanced off the post, and the Lions were able to clear the ball.
Moseley made three saves for the Moccasins while facing 15 shots.
Florida Southern will be at home on Tuesday against West Georgia, with kickoff scheduled for 5 p.m.
