Freshmen Bats Back Oglevie's Pitching in Game One; Wilmington Wins Game Two for a Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT €" Florida Southern got another outstanding game from pitcher Chelsea Oglevie on Wednesday, and plenty of hitting all throughout the lineup, especially from freshmen Jordan Alexander and Leah Pemberton, in a 6-0 win over Wilmington (DE). However, the Wildcats did most of the hitting in game two of the doubleheader, and came away with a 17-1 victory for themselves.

In the first game, the Moccasins not only got a shutout from Oglevie, they also got three hits and an RBI from Alexander (Valrico, FL), and two hits and two RBI from Pemberton (Valrico, FL). Junior Allasyn Lieneck (Oldsmar, FL) had two hits as well, and every player in the batting order had at least one. The Moccasins struck for one run in the top of the first, added two more in the top of the fifth, and blew the game open with three in the top of the seventh.

Their first run came after Alexander started the game with a single and Pemberton drew a bases-loaded walk. Pemberton later made it a 2-0 game with an RBI double in the fifth, which came after junior Gianni Artidiello had reached on an error that started the inning. Pemberton then moved to third on a single by Lieneck, and when Lieneck stole second, Pemberton scored on a wild throw into left field.

The Moccasins doubled their lead to 6-0 in the top of the seventh when they had five hits and a hit batter off two Wilmington pitchers. They started the inning with four straight singles by Heather Brinkmeier (Port St. Joe, FL), Pemberton, Lieneck, and Christie Bailey (Jacksonville, FL), with Bailey’s hit driving in a run and knocking starting pitcher Danielle Griffin out of the game. Relief pitcher Jillian Stafford got a force out at the plate, but gave up an RBI single to Khaliah Brown (Groveport, OH) and hit Alexander with a pitch to force in another run.

Through it all, Oglevie kept the Wildcats off the board, pitching her second shutout of the season while giving up only three hits. The junior from Tampa had a season-high seven strikeouts, walked one and had just one inning that caused her any difficulty. She improved her record to 4-5, and has now won four of her last five starts, with only a 1-0 loss to Francis Marion in between.

Oglevie gave up singles in the second, fourth and sixth innings, and issued her walk in the sixth inning as well. That was the only time Oglevie got into trouble, but it came after a couple of defensive mix-ups by the Moccasins. The sixth-inning hit was a ground ball back to Oglevie near the pitcher’s circle, but with no one covering first base, Shelby Thompson ended up with an infield single. The next batter, Brook Ash, hit a one-bouncer down to Artidiello at third, but this time the Mocs had no one at second, resulting in a fielder’s choice that put runners at first and second.

Oglevie shrugged it off though, getting a pop-up and strikeout to end the inning with the Mocs still up 3-0 at that point. After they scored three runs in the top of the seventh, Oglevie retired the Wildcats in order in the bottom of the seventh to close out the game.

Griffin took the loss in game one for Wilmington in her first start of the season. She gave up six runs on 12 hits in six innings-plus, but only three of those runs were earned. She struck out one and walked three.

The second game of Wednesday’s doubleheader started off in Wilmington’s favor with the Wildcats scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. After Florida Southern got one of those runs back in the bottom of the first, the Wildcats scored three more in the top of the third, and took control with six in the fourth.

A good chunk of the damage was done by Stafford, the Wilmington first baseman who went 4-for-4 with three doubles and five RBI. All four of her hits drove in runs. The Wildcats also got two doubles and five RBI from catcher Rachel Painter, and two doubles and five RBI from Rice Fazio.

After Wilmington had gone ahead 2-0 in the top of the first, Florida Southern came back with one in the bottom of the first after 1-out singles by Artidiello and Dayna Hunn. Brinkmeier drove in the run with a sacrifice fly to left.

The Mocs also got hits from Bailey, Pemberton and Brown before the game was ended by the 8-run rule after five innings.

Chelsea Botsch earned the win for Wilmington to even her record at 1-1. She pitched all five innings, giving up five hits, striking out two and walking no one.

Florida Southern begins Sunshine State Conference play this weekend when it travels to St. Petersburg for a 3-game series with Eckerd College. The first game is Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
