Moccasins Drop Non-Conference Game to Nova; Artidiello Goes 3-for-3

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLEARWATER â€" When the Moccasins brought in transfer Gianni Artidiello in the offseason, they were hoping she could provide a spark at the top of the lineup in their newly constructed offense. She did that on Saturday by going 3-for-3 against her former team, but Florida Southern was unable to dig out of an early hole and fell to Nova Southeastern 4-1, in a non-conference game at the Eckerd College Invitational.

Artidiello, a junior from Miami, started every game for Nova Southeastern as a freshman in 2011 before transferring to the State College of Florida-Manatee last year. Now with the Moccasins, she equaled her career high of three hits with singles in the first, fourth and sixth innings, and her leadoff hit in the bottom of the fourth led to Mocs’ only run off Sharks pitcher Jennie Von Doellen.

Von Doellen gave up just five hits in the game, with Christie Bailey (Jacksonville, FL) and Allasyn Lieneck (Oldsmar, FL) picking up the others. The junior from Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan struck out nine and walked none while improving to 4-1 on the season. She retired nine of the first 10 Moccasin batters before giving up her only run in the fourth, and by that time, her teammates had staked her to a 3-0 lead.

The Sharks (6-1) scored their first run in the top of the first inning when Lorena Spaulding led off the game with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and came home on a base hit by Ashley Silveira. They added two more runs in the third, an inning that started with an error and culminated with a 2-out, 2-run single by Chrissy Tabulov.

The Moccasins got one of those runs back in the bottom of the fourth after Artidiello led off with a single and Dayna Hunn (Morriston, FL) was hit by a pitch. Heather Brinkmeier (Port St. Joe, FL) bunted them into scoring position, and Leah Pemberton (Valrico, FL) drove in Artidiello with a fly ball to right center.

The Mocs then put their leadoff runner on in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings with singles from Bailey, Artidiello and Lieneck, but Von Doellen pitched around them.

Sophomore Lauren Wolfe (Lithia, FL) took the loss for Florida Southern, falling to 0-2 despite giving up just one earned run in 6.0 innings of work. She allowed eight hits, struck out two and walked three.

Lindsay LaChance (Hallowell, ME) pitched the seventh inning when Silveira moved around the bases on a single, illegal pitch, sacrifice bunt and wild pitch for the Sharks’ final run.
