Box Score
LAKELAND â€" Dayna Hunn had only two chances to swing the bat Friday night, but the sophomore catcher made the most of them â€" even though one was all junior pitcher Chelsea Oglevie really needed. Hunn went 2-for-2 and helped Florida Southern score both of its runs, and Oglevie tossed a 5-hit shutout to lead the Moccasins to a 2-0 win over Lynn in the first of their 3-game Sunshine State Conference series.
Hunn’s first-inning single set up the first run of the game, though an error on the play was also a factor, and her third-inning single drove in the second run. With a runner at third in the fifth, inning, Lynn pitcher Kasey Murray walked her on four pitches, never putting one close enough to the strike zone for Hunn to touch.
Murray was otherwise in control for the Knights, giving up only four hits in the game, with junior Khaliah Brown (Groveport, OH) reaching on an infield single in the fifth, and junior Allasyn Lieneck (Oldsmar, FL) picking up a bad-hop single in the sixth. The junior from nearby Land o’ Lakes walked four and had no strikeouts, but despite giving up only one earned run, fell to 8-9.
Oglevie was equally adept, giving up five hits and one walk, and striking out five. The walk came to leadoff batter Danielle McNeill in the first inning before she retired eight in a row. McNeill and Bianca Savulak then delivered back-to-back singles with two out in the top of the third, but Oglevie left them stranded. She also left two on base in the sixth inning when the Knights had consecutive 1-out singles by Devin Kochergen and Kaci Vassalo.
The win gives Oglevie an 8-7 record on the season, and the shutout was her fourth.
The Moccasins gave her a run to work with right away when junior Gianni Artidiello (Miami, FL) walked in the bottom of the first and Hunn followed with a single to left. When the ball got past Christina Carvatta, Artidiello easily scored.
When Hunn came up again with two out in the third inning, Brown was standing on second after a walk and wild pitch. She ripped a pitch past Vassalo at first and down the line in right, allowing Brown to score for a 2-0 lead.
Florida Southern and Lynn will wrap up their series on Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
