MIAMI SHORES â€" An early blast by Alexis Kent gave Barry the lead Friday night, and though Florida Southern made Buccaneer pitcher Alexis Yohe work hard all the way to the end, the Mocs were never able to take the lead themselves. Kent’s 2-run homer in the second inning was followed by four unearned runs over the next three innings, as Barry came away with a 6-3 victory.
Yohe gave up four hits, walked four, and hit a batter. The Moccasins (9-12, 3-1 SSC) also got one addition base runner, but the senior got through the game while making nearly 140 pitches. She had 30 in the first inning alone when she hit Dayna Hunn and walked Heather Brinkmeier, but kept the Mocs off the board with a pair of strikeouts.
Kent came through for Barry (13-9, 2-2) in the bottom of the second with a home run to deep left that followed a leadoff walk to Paula Mackin. That put the Bucs ahead 2-0, and they turned out to be the only earned runs allowed by Moccasin pitcher Chelsea Oglevie. The junior from Tampa gave up seven hits, struck out six and walked three while Florida Southern committed four errors.
One of those errors played a role in the bottom of the third when the Bucs scored on a 2-out bases-loaded walk by Kelly Martinez. They also had singles by Natlia Ojeda and Julie Brito in the inning.
Florida Southern broke through in the top of the fourth against Yohe when Hunn led off the inning with a triple for the Mocs’ first hit. A walk by Leah Pemberton put runners at first and third with one out, and when Pemberton stole second, Hunn scored on an errant throw. An RBI single by Christie Bailey gave the Mocs another run and made the score 3-2.
Oglevie then got the first two outs in the bottom of the fourth, but Barry loaded the bases for the second inning in a row on a walk by Ojeda, a single by Megan Copeland and an error. The Bucs would score on a wild pitch to again take a 2-run lead.
The Mocs committed two errors in the fifth inning, with Barry scoring on one of them and pinch-hitter Britney Pugh’s RBI double providing another run. It gave Barry a 6-2 lead entering the seventh inning, where a walk to Kelliann Connors (her second of the game) led to an RBI single by Gianni Artidiello.
Oglevie fell to 6-6 with the loss, while Yohe improved to 6-4.
Florida Southern and Barry will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
