Box Score
WINTER PARK â€" Pitchers Chelsea Oglevie and Niki Fogle thoroughly dominated the game Friday night, but Rollins second baseman Brittany Johnson came through on the one scoring chance either team had. With a total of only five hits in the game, Johnson’s 2-run single in the bottom of the fourth supplied the scoring as the 22nd-ranked Tars defeated Florida Southern 2-0.
Now 22-3 on the season, Fogle held the Moccasins (17-27, 6-13 Sunshine State Conference) to one hit, a second-inning infield single by freshman Kelliann Connors. She also walked Christie Bailey in the first and Dayna Hunn in the fourth, and Hunn was the only runner the Mocs got into scoring position. Fogle finished with five strikeouts in her seventh shutout of the season.
While Fogle was shutting down the Moccasins, Oglevie was doing the same to the Tars (40-8, 15-7) throughout most of the game, handcuffing the best hitting team in the SSC. The Tars had come into the game hitting .312. Oglevie allowed only four hits and five base runners, but fell to 11-15 on the season. The junior struck out two, walked one, and needed just 63 pitches to toss a complete game that took 70 minutes to complete. She also made the defensive play of the night by casually grabbing a line drive hit right back at her in the second inning by Courtney Durbin.
The Tars were able to break through against Oglevie in the bottom of the fourth, however. A single by Kristie Hoeffer and a walk by Jessica Gipson gave Rollins two base runners, and the Tars used their running game to move them around the bases. After Veronica Alred flied out to center for the second out of the inning, Hoeffer stole second before Gipson walked. A double steal then put both runners into scoring position for Johnson, who got the ball just past a diving Bailey at shortstop and into short leftfield.
The only other base runners allowed by Oglevie were a bunt single by Hannah Lovestrand in the bottom of the first, and a single by Hoeffer in the bottom of the sixth.
Florida Southern and Rollins will complete their series with a 1:00 doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
