Box Score WINTER PARK – Five different players scored for 7th-ranked Rollins on Wednesday night, but the best individual game of the night may have belonged to Florida Southern's Helena Norrstrom. Even in a 5-0 loss, the freshman goalkeeper put on a dazzling second-half display of athleticism with 12 saves while allowing just one goal in the Moccasins' first Sunshine State Conference game of the season.
The Moccasins (4-1-3, 0-1) already knew they had one outstanding goalkeeper in senior Erin Moseley (Jacksonville, Fla.), but Wednesday night showed they have another one too. Norrstrom, who hails from Saltsjobaden, Sweden, entered the game with the Mocs trailing 4-0 in the second half and dominated the remaining 38 minutes of the game. Her first save came in the 58th minute, and she had four more by the 64th. Two of those came in rapid-fire succession in the 61st, and two more came the same way in the 64th before the Tars scored their final goal of the night in the 65th.
Norrstrom wasn't finished though. In the 90th minute, with the Tars again threatening to score, she did it a third time, stopping two more shots back-to-back at close range and was only denied a third when Rollins was flagged for offside.
Overall, Rollins had 34 shots in the match, and Moseley made five saves in the first 51 minutes. As well as the two Florida Southern goalkeepers played though, the Tars (7-1, 2-0) were still able to score three goals in the first half and two more in the second. Mora Johnson was involved in four of them, assisting three and scoring one, and Emma Bloom played a role in three, with one goal and two assists.
The first goal came just 3½ minutes into the game when Bloom and Johnson worked the ball through the attacking third to give Brenna McKee a 1-touch shot from the 6-yard box. The score remained 1-0 until the 29th minute when Johnson collected a loose ball near the left sideline and launched a shot from 30 yards that allowed her to match McKee's total of six goals for the season.
Allie Holly scored the final goal of the first half in the 35th minute as Johnson again provided an assist with a perfect cross out of the right corner for another 1-touch shot from the edge of the 6-yard box.
Barely one minute into the second half, the Tars scored again with Paxton Sickler notching her team-leading seventh goal of the season before Johnson's cross to the far post in the 65th minute set up a goal by Bloom, and the only blemish on Norrstrom's fabulous night between the posts.
Florida Southern was held to four shots in the game, with the Mocs' best scoring chances coming from sophomores Kristy Legoas (Palm Harbor, Fla.) and Sheila Ramos (Tampa, Fla.). Both players forced Mary Spring into saves on good shots from inside 18 yards, but the Rollins goalkeeper was up to the task each time. She finished with three saves in the game before Sally McGurn completed the shutout by playing the final 10 minutes.
Florida Southern will be at home on Saturday when it hosts Nova Southeastern at 4:30 p.m.
