Moccasin Men Take Fifth At Flrunners.com Invitational

TITUSVILLE – The Florida Southern men's cross country team took home a fifth-place finish in Friday evening's Flrunners.com Invitational here at the Chain of Lakes Park.

The Moccasins, voted the No. 1 team in the South Region in the latest NCAA Division II Regional Poll released by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), finished fifth out of 10 non-Division I teams with 144 points. Five of the team's six runners finished inside the Top 50, and for the five freshmen competing in the event, it was their first collegiate 5K race.

Freshmen John Bryant (Valrico, Fla.) and Patrick Webb (Kingman, Ariz.) finished back-to-back in 23rd and 24th place, respectively, out of the 102 non-Division I runners. Bryant turned in a time of 17:03.86. Webb followed less than two seconds later (17:05.68).

The next Moc to cross the finish line was freshman Christian Beauchemin (Pembroke Pines, Fla.), who finished in 34th place (17:27.02). Logan Selzer, the senior from Wesley Chapel, Fla., was the only upperclassman to compete for FSC. He finished 10 spots after Beauchemin in 44th place with a time of 17:54.66.

Rounding out the Top 50 was freshman David Yarborough (Jacksonville, Fla.) with a 18:17.82 and fellow freshmanOswaldo Zapata (Haines City, Fla.) was credited with a 79th-place finish (20:00.94).

Sunshine State Conference foe Saint Leo won the non-Division I portion of the event with 38 points as they placed four of its runners in the Top 10, including the race winner, Rafal Matuszczak, finishing in a time of 15:30.25. Southeastern University finished in second place with 102 points.

The Mocs return to action on Friday, Oct.10 at the Florida State Invitational in Tallahassee, Fla. The race will be held at the Apalachee Regional Park beginning at 6:30 p.m.
