Mocs Win in 11 Innings at #12 Mount Olive, Take Its Fourth Straight Series

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - Florida Southern needed extra innings for the second straight game on Sunday afternoon en route to posting an 8-7 victory over 12th-ranked Mount Olive in the rubber game of the three-set series between the two teams at Scarborough Field.

With the victory, the Moccasins improved to 11-6 overall on the season and won its fourth straight series this season, while UMO falls to 12-6 overall. On Saturday, UMO picked up a 5-0 win in the series opener, before the Mocs earned a 6-4 win in nine innings of the second game of the series. The second game was scheduled for seven innings.

In Sunday's game, the big heroes offensively were junior catcher Joey Miller (Sarasota, Fla.), who recorded a career-high 4 RBIs, including 3 RBIs on a 3-run homer in the fifth inning and junior third baseman Chris Dennis (Rockledge, Fla.), who drove home junior centerfielder Keith Curcio (Sarasota, Fla.) with the go-ahead and what proved to the winning run on his infield single in the 11th inning.

On the mound, the heroes were the Mocs bullpen as their four relievers combined to throw 7.1 innings and allow just four hits and one run, while walking six and striking out three in relief of sophomore Ben Richardson (Orlando, Fla.), who allowed nine hits and six runs, all of which were earned, in 3.2 innings of work. The right-hander walked three and struck out one in his 74-pitch outing.

The Mocs got on the scoreboard first in the top of the opening inning as senior designated hitter Jimmy Correnti deposited a Jordy Farthing pitch over the fence in right center for his second home run of the season.
