Late First-half Goal Plagues Mocs against Alabama-Huntsville

Box Score

PENSACOLA – Florida Southern fell to Alabama-Huntsville 1-0 on a goal in the final minute of the first half in the Marriott Spring Hill Suites Invitational at Brosnaham Park late Friday afternoon.

Florida Southern (1-1) played from behind for the first time this season to start the second half against Alabama-Huntsville (2-1) who was able to capitalize on a long deflection out to the top of the box and a shot into the upper left corner by Mitch Wilson with less than half a minute to go before halftime.

For the most part, it was a very uneventful first half for the Mocs. With a combined seven shots, and only two on goal (both for UAH), both sides seemed to be at a stalemate. The first chance of the game came in the 13th minute when a defensive breakdown led to a point-blank shot from Leo De Smedt that rung off the post. FSC would get its best look at a lead 25 minutes later when a shot from senior Stephen Pratt (Dublin, Ireland) that looked bound for the back of the net was blocked by a sliding Charger defender.

UAH would look to strike again early in the second half, but a leaping save by sophomore Cole Clingerman (Auburndale, Fla.) sent the ball over the crossbar rather than into the upper right corner. Clingerman would make three saves on the night.

Five minutes later, junior Alexi Cortez (Largo, Fla.) would fire a shot from just inside the box, but the Chargers' defense would come up with another big block. Cortez, who was the focal point for the Moccasins attack, fired another quality shot in the 76th minute, but missed just wide of to the left. FSC's final scoring chance came off a corner from senior Mitchell Francois (Frisco, Texas) and to the head of freshman Kieran Whitehead (Worcester, England) that got too much air under it and missed high. The Florida Southern attack that outshot Webber International 24-4 was held to just 10 shots on the night, none of which were on goal.

The Moccasins look to rebound in their final game here in Pensacola on Sunday, September 14 against the 18th-ranked University of West Florida at 4 p.m.
