Box Score LAKELAND – The Moccasins scored four unanswered goals to down Barry 4-1 on in a non-conference game Saturday night marking the first time the Buccaneers have been defeated at Barnett Field since 2007.
With just its seventh win against Barry (3-2-1) all-time, four of which came at home, Florida Southern (4-1) avenges its elimination in the SSC Tournament to end last season in Miami Shores. Additionally, this was the first time the Mocs have scored four or more goals in a game since a 5-1 victory at Eckerd on October 9th last season.
The game initially seemed like it would be a similar battle between these two teams with Frank Lustig putting the Buccaneers on the board first in the 14th minute. Countering off a corner, a punt by goalkeeper Robby Shearer sent Lustig on a breakaway.
FSC would knot things up at one at the 19-minute mark on a shot from sophomore Corey Mills (Wellington, New Zealand) from the left along the goal line somehow found its way under the crossbar and inside the far post. Ten minutes later, a cross from the left was headed on goal by sophomore Michael Cortright (Anacortes, Wash.) and knocked away by Shearer only to land at the feet of sophomore Jonathan Radvogin (Vasteras, Sweden) who booted it into the back of the net.
The Mocs would earn one more first-half goal in the 39th minute when freshman Priit Peedo (Tartu, Estonia) crossed the ball from the left sideline into the box for fellow freshman Kieran Whitehead (Worcester, England) to bury his shot. Shearer would be replaced by Jimmy McGregor to start the second half after giving up three goals and making four saves.
At the other end of the field, sophomore goalkeeper Cole Clingerman (Auburndale, Fla.) had to work hard to keep his team ahead, but was up for the task as made a season-high seven saves on 19 shots from Barry. Clingerman is no stranger to proving his worth against the Bucs as he made ten saves in last season's playoff game, the only time he has made double-digit saves in his career.
The final goal for the Mocs came in the 56th minute when Radvogin netted his second of the night off a cross from senior Clay Clingerman (Auburndale, Fla.) from the right. Radvogin, Whitehead, and freshman Jimmy Oatman (La Paz, Bolivia) are all tied for the team lead in goals, with two, and in points, with four.
Florida Southern returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Tampa (3-1-1) for a non-conference matchup with the Spartans with kickoff set at 7 p.m.
