Twin Brothers Combine for One Glorious Goal as FSC Defeats Lynn 1-0

Box Score

LAKELAND – Twin brothers Edward Spansk and Carl Spansk were probably a package deal when they came to Florida Southern last year from Mora, Sweden, and if that's the case, head coach Ryan Sniegoski could not have been happier with what they delivered Saturday night. With Edward on the receiving end of a corner kick from Carl, the Spansk brothers hooked up for the only goal of the match and gave the Moccasins a 1-0 win over defending national champion Lynn University.

Edward Spansk was Florida Southern's leading scorer as a freshman, but had not yet scored in 2015 until his header made it over the goal line with 8:12 remaining in the first half. The timing was perfect in two ways, with his brother putting him position for the back post header. It was only eleven days earlier that Carl Spansk gave the Moccasins (4-7, 3-3 Sunshine State Conference) another 1-0 win over Tampa by curling in a corner kick from the exact same spot.

The victory over Lynn (4-2-2, 2-2-1) was only the second all-time for the Moccasins in 24 meetings with the Knights, with the other coming in Boca Raton in 2010. It also gives Florida Southern wins over Lynn, Tampa, and Rollins (three of the traditional powers in the Sunshine State Conference) all in the same season for the first time ever.

While the goal was certainly a glorious moment for the twin brothers, it wasn't the first time they'd connected on one at Florida Southern. They began their college careers in 2014 by doing the same thing in a 3-0 win over Webber International. This one was a whole lot bigger, and puts Florida Southern in second place in the SSC standings with league games remaining against Florida Tech and Saint Leo.

The Moccasin defense also recorded its third conference shutout of the year, one short of the team record set in 1997 when they had 11 overall that season under former Moccasin goalkeeper Kris Pahl. The Mocs even accomplished Saturday night's shutout with three freshmen starting on the back line in Luke Bromley, Daniel Moore, and Pablo Gallo Arias, and one sophomore in Kevin Davidsson. All of them made big plays at different points in the match, as did midfielder Romain Voirin. They helped keep national scoring leader Chris Hellman without a point for the first time this season, and the first time in 25 games dating back to last season. They also limited him to only one shot on goal.

So did Cole Clingerman, who made five saves for the Moccasins in another stellar effort by the junior goalkeeper from nearby Auburndale. It was Clingerman's second shutout of the week after he made seven saves at Rollins on Wednesday. Saturday against the Knights, he came up with three big stops in the first 15 minutes to keep Lynn off the board. He didn't have to make another until the 67th minute, but that was a crucial stop too, coming on a corner kick that was played into the middle of the box. Clingerman's play in the air was another component of the match, with the Knights frequently unable to connect as the FSC goalkeeper punched several balls out of danger.

The final stat sheet showed each team with 16 shots, Clingerman with five saves, and Jonny DeMoya with seven saves for Lynn. The Mocs kept the Knights under pressure throughout the match, with DeMoya forced to come off his line several times.

Florida Southern will play its next match on Wednesday at home against Embry-Riddle. Game time is 7 p.m.
