Box Score LAKELAND – With goals coming from four different players, and James White making five saves between the posts, Saint Leo defeated Florida Southern 4-0 Saturday night in the Moccasins' regular season finale. Despite the loss though, the Moccasins still remain alive for a spot in the SSC Tournament with other conference games still to be played elsewhere.
The Lions (8-4, 4-2) remained in the hunt for the SSC title with their fifth straight win and scored twice in each half against the Moccasins (5-8-1, 3-4-1). Their first goal came just two minutes into the game when their leading scorer, Maximilian Schulze-Geisthovel knocked in a bouncing ball near the back post following a corner kick from Matthias Katerna. Schulze-Geisthovel then assisted the second goal with a ball sent in to Brandon Rivera, who bounced his shot off the left post for a 2-0 lead midway through the first half.
In the second half, the Lions used a penalty kick by Matt Campbell in the 60th minute, and a goal by Jorge Braham in the 79th minute to secure the win. Braham's goal came after the Mocs were forced to play a man down for the final 30 minutes.
Junior goalkeeper Cole Clingerman helped keep Florida Southern in the game with another impressive performance between the posts, making eight saves. Two of those in the first half were in spectacular fashion, and both came against Andy Garcia.
White's five saves gave the Saint Leo goalkeeper his third shutout of the season, and he was twice forced into action by Jimmy Oatman in the second half as the Mocs attempted a comeback. Oatman had three of the Mocs' 10 shots on the night.
Florida Southern will now be watching the scoreboard in the days ahead to find out if it will qualify for the SSC Tournament the first week of November. If the Moccasins do qualify, they will be on the road for the first round on Tuesday, November 3, and there are several possibilities as to where they would play.
