Box Score SAINT LEO – Saint Leo's Arielle Kabangu scored one goal and assisted on two others as the Lions defeated the Moccasins 3-2 in a Sunshine State Conference match here at University Field on the Saint Leo campus.
Saint Leo scored its first goal following a blocked penalty kick in the 24th minute. Kabangu took the kick for the Lions and fired a shot low to the far post that Moc keeper Helena Norrstrom blocked, but the ball rebounded off Norrstrom and Kabangu won the loose ball and then passed out to Genevieve Gignac who shot across the goal and inside the near post for her ninth tally of the year.
Nine minutes later, Kabangu scored herself, off an assist by Lindsay Perkins, with a chip over Norrstrom for a 2-0 Saint Leo lead. The goal is the 10th of the season for Kabangu, who is second in the SSC in goals scored.
The Mocs got on the board in the closing minute of the first half when Taylor Cox converted on a penalty kick with 22 seconds left, beating Saint Leo keeper Abby Evans to her right. It was Cox's first goal of the season and the second of her career.
Saint Leo (7-7-1 overall and 3-4 in the SSC) outshot Florida Southern 13-7 in the first half with the Lions holding the edge with six shots on goal vs. five by the Moccasins. Each keeper recorded four saves in the opening 45 minutes.
Florida Southern tied the game in the second half when Sheila Ramos stole a pass near midfield and sent the ball to the top of the box where Dominique Cirnigliaro flicked the ball on to Kristy Legoas who chipped a shot over Evans for the equalizer in the 64th minute. The goal is Legoas' first of the season.
Saint Leo took the lead back just over three minutes later as Kabangu dribbled inside the box and then passed off to Perkins who hit a shot back to the near post for a 3-2 Lions lead.
Ramos nearly knotted the game in the 75th minute but her shot from 20 yards out hit the cross bar.
The Moccasins, who closed the regular season with a 3-10-1 overall record and a 2-6 mark in the SSC, outshot the Lions 18-10 and had 10 shots on goal vs. eight by Saint Leo. Norrstrom finished with five saves while Evans stopped eight shots by Florida Southern.
