Box Score WALTHAM, Mass. - Sophomore outside hitter Anna Tovo continued her hot play here Saturday afternoon as she recorded a match-high 15 kills and hit .333 to help lead the 17th-ranked Moccasins to a three-set victory over LIU Post (25-23, 25-20, 25-12) in its final match of the Bentley Volleyball Invitational at the Dana Center.
With the win, the Moccasins opened the 2015 campaign 4-0 for the first since the 2010 season. LIU Post suffered its first loss of the season after opening the season by earning three straight wins.
Tovo was named the MVP of the Bentley Volleyball Invitational after recording 45 kills, 29 digs and hitting .340 in FSC's four victories. In addition to Tovo, senior right side hitter Kendall Marotti (LaBelle, Fla.) was also named to the seven-member All-Tournament Team after recording recording 40 kills (3.08 kills per set), 24 digs, 14 blocks, eight aces and hitting a team-best .395.
Along with Tovo's 15 kills against LIU Post, senior middle blocker Kayshia Brady (Welaka, Fla.) added nine kills, four blocks and hbit .354 and Marotti also had nine kills, three blocks and hit .467 in the victory.
As a team, the Mocs once again hit over .250 in the victory as they finished the match with a .304 attack percentage, including hitting over .320 in the second and third sets. FSC also had 40 kills in the win.
In four matches this season, the Mocs are hitting .300 as a team and have three players hitting over .330 on the season.
Defensively, the Mocs outblocked LIU Post, 8-3 and held the Pioneers to an .011 hitting percentage. LIU Post hit .000 in the second set and was held to a -.074 percentage in the third and final set. FSC has held its first four opponents to a combined .036 attack percentage.
The first two sets were highly contested as the first set featured six ties and three lead changes, while the second set had five ties and three lead changes.
In the first set, LIU Post jumped out to 7-3 lead and led 15-11 when the Mocs used a 7-3 run to take an 18-17 lead following a kill by Brady. After a Moccasin service error retied the set at 18, the Mocs scored three of the next four points to take a 22-19 lead. The Pioneers, though, would score four straight points to take a 23-22 lead. FSC would respond by scoring the set's final three points to seal its 25-23 win. The set was capped by an assisted block from Tovo and sophomore middle blocker Allie Geary (DeLand, Fla.).
Much like the first set, LIU Post jumped out to an early lead in the second set and held a 9-4 lead when the Mocs responded with a 5-0 run to tie the set at 9. After a kill by Rachel Londot stopped the Mocs run, FSC would use a 5-2 run to take a 14-11 lead. The run was capped by back-to-back kills from freshman outside hitter Nicole Mattson (Oviedo, Fla.) and Tovo. The Mocs would push its lead to 23-16, before the Pioneers responded by scoring four of the next five points to pull within 24-20. That would be as close as LIU Post would get as an attack error by Danielle Valenza on set point gave the Mocs 25-20 win and 2-0 lead in the match.
The third set belonged to the Mocs as they scored the first five points and jumped out to an 8-1 advantage, before the Pioneeers used a 6-2 run to pull within 10-7. That would prove to be as close as LIU Post would get as the Mocs closed the set on a 15-5 run to post a 25-12 win to seal its third three-set sweep of the young season.
Tovo had 12 of her 15 kills in the first and third sets as she had seven of FSC's 14 kills in the first set and then added five of the Mocs 12 kills in the third set.
Monica Amador led the way for the Pioneers with a team-high seven kills and added six digs. In addition, Londot added six kills and six digs and Valenza, who was also named to the All-Tournament Team, had four kills, five digs and two blocks in the setback.
Freshman setter Bethany Besancenez (St. Louis, Mo.) tied her career high with 28 assists runing the Moccasins' offense.
Both teams each had seven aces in the match, while the Mocs gave the Pioneers 12 free points thanks to its service errors. LIU Post committed just four service errors.
Tovo, Marotti and Valenza were joined on the All-Tournament Team by Minnesota-Crookston's Stephanie Pearson, New Haven's Kristine Ross, Chestnut Hill's Regine Trabosh and Bentley's Lauren Van Buren.
FSC will open the home portion of its schedule next weekend (Sept. 11-12) as they host its annual FSC/Terrace Hotel Classic at Jenkins Field House. The Mocs open the event on Sept. 11 with a 1:30 p.m. match against Merrimack, before facing Central Oklahoma at 7:30 p.m. On Sept. 12, the Mocs will face 25th-ranked Armstrong State at 2:30 p.m. and then conclude the event at 7:30 p.m. against 22nd-ranked West Texas A&M.
