Second Straight Second Half Explosion Gives FSC Men's Soccer Team 6-2 Win at Embry-Riddle

Box Score

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – For the second game in a row Florida Southern erased a halftime deficit with a second-half explosion of goals as Jonathan Radvogin scored twice and assisted another in a 6-2 win at Embry-Riddle Wednesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Embry-Riddle (2-4-3) led 1-0 at halftime on a 23rd minute goal by Joao Belmonte, but Florida Southern (5-3-1) erased that lead with two goals in the first seven minutes of the second half. Radvogin scored the equalizer 1:45 into the second half, dribbling through the defense on the right side of the box, before Hassirou Diakite's header off a corner kick by Callum Carsley put the Mocs ahead 2-1 at the 51:52 mark.
  • Shortly after the Mocs had gone on top, the teams combined for three goals in the span of 67 seconds, which left Florida Southern with a 4-2 lead just 13 minutes into the second half. Florian Thumm started that flurry with his fourth goal of the season at the 56:48 mark on another header, but Embry-Riddle answered 24 seconds later on a goal by Knutur Bjornsson. The Moccasins responded 43 seconds after that when Radvogin scored his second goal of the match. Both FSC goals during that sequence were assisted by sophomore defender Nick Atwood, with the second one coming on a throw-in to Radvogin.
  • Florida Southern tacked on two more goals in the 72nd and 73rd minutes as Rene Rivera and Joseph Ammer hit the back of the net to provide the final 6-2 margin. The goal was the first for Rivera, while Ammer re-gained sole possession of the team lead from Thumm with his fifth goal of the season.
  • Thumm nearly had another goal but hit the post just prior to the corner kick that led to Diakite's goal.
  • Florida Southern out-shot Embry-Riddle 21-10, and 13 of those shots were on target. It was the fourth time this year the Mocs had at least 20 shots, something they did not do at all in 2015.
  • Each team had only two corner kicks, and the Mocs used one of theirs to score the go-ahead goal.
  • Cole Clingerman had four saves for the Moccasins and Richard Dearle had six for the Eagles before being replaced by Felix Lohmeyer with 12:15 remaining. Lohmeyer added one save to the Eagles' total.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Wednesday night marked the second game in a row the Mocs were down at halftime but came back to win. They trailed Rollins 2-0 last Wednesday before scoring four goals in the second half for a 4-3 win.
  • Wednesday night also marked the fourth time in Ryan Sniegoski's four years as head coach that Florida Southern has scored at least five goals, and the second time this year, but it's the first time they've put six on the board since a 6-2 win over St. Thomas on September 9, 2011.
  • The last time the Mocs had two games in one season with five or more goals was 2010: a 6-1 win at St. Andrew's (NC) and a 10-0 win at home vs. Ave Maria.
  • The Moccasins have four games this year with at least four goals, and have done that in back-to-back games for the first time since doing it in each of the first three games in 2011.
  • With 23 goals in the first nine games, the Moccasins have already surpassed their total from last year. They're also the most they've score during Sniegoski's 4-year tenure, and their current scoring average would be the highest for the team since 2004.
  • Rene Rivera and Nick Atwood each recorded their first career points. Rivera, a freshman from Dover, England, was playing in his third game of the season and scored his first goal. Atwood, a sophomore from Andover, Massachusetts, played in four games as a reserve this year before starting the last three.
  • Florida Southern is now 14-7-1 all-time against Embry-Riddle. Wednesday night was the first time the Mocs had played in Daytona Beach since 1998, a 2-1 win by the Eagles.
  • Though Embry-Riddle is a provisional member of the Sunshine State Conference, the game does not count in the SSC standings.

UP NEXT

  • Florida Southern returns home for its next match against Florida Tech on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
