Finishing Touch by Ammer Gives FSC 1-0 Win Over Nova Southeastern in SSC Opener

Box Score

LAKELAND – Joseph Ammer's goal in the 73rd minute put Florida Southern ahead and proved to be the only goal of the night, while Cole Clingerman made seven saves to give the Moccasins a 1-0 win over Nova Southeastern. By winning their first Sunshine State Conference match of the season, the Moccasins are now 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the SSC, while the Sharks fall to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

SNIEGOSKI SAYS

"I could not be a prouder coach after this one. Nova Southeastern is a quality side that is very well-coached. Our guys showed heart, determination, and enough quality for the win. We will get back to the grind tomorrow and take another step forward."

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Ammer scored at the 72:27 mark with help from Jacob Ling-Vannerus and Florian Thumm, with the play originating in the left corner of the field. After the ball was played across the center, Ammer came in alone at the back post to finish the play for his second goal of the season.
  • Ammer led the Moccasins with four shots in the game and had another strong attempt on a free kick in the 51st minute that was blocked by the Nova Southeastern wall near the top of the box.
  • Ling-Vannerus had a big night in a reserve role once again, not only picking up an assist but also taking three shots. Ling-Vannerus and senior Mike Cortright were the only reserves used in the game for Florida Southern.
  • Florida Southern' second shutout of the season came courtesy of a starting back line of Pablo Gallo Arias, Luke Bromley, Carl Spansk, and Callum Carsley.
  • Clingerman had his best game of the season with seven saves, at least four of which were extremely difficult plays. His first effort came on a shot by Viktor Jonsson in the 12th minute at point blank range. Twice in the second half, Clingerman went high to push balls over the crossbar.
  • Nova Southeastern's Nico Rosiglioni also had to make a tough save early in the game on a header by Hassirou Diakite. He also stopped a penalty kick with 1:21 remaining.
  • The shot totals were nearly even, with Florida Southern taking 13 and Nova Southeastern taking 12. The Sharks, however, had 13 corner kicks to the Moccasins' six.
  • Both teams hit either the bar or a post once early in the game. Carsley hit the crossbar in the 16th minute for Florida Southern, and Bestun Mohammed struck one off the right post in the 19th.
  • On a humid night that was otherwise dry during the game, Diakite and Nova Southeastern's Inaki Dominguez were the only midfielders or forwards who went all 90 minutes.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Florida Southern and Nova Southeastern have now split their last six meetings, and all three Moccasin wins have been by scores of 1-0. The Mocs had actually lost the last three games against the Sharks at home, but won twice on the road during that span.
  • Wednesday night marked the third time in the last five years the Moccasins began conference play against the Sharks.
  • The last time the Mocs won their conference opener was in 2011, at Eckerd by the score of 3-2.
  • Ammer is one of four Moccasins who have already scored two goals this season, joining Thumm, Ling-Vannerus and Dani Morillo.
  • Clingerman's second shutout of the season gives him 10 in his career and sole possession of third place on the all-time Moccasin list. He trails only Cliff Dixon, who had 17 from 1995-97, and Clint Harris who had 10½ from 2002-05.
  • Clingerman tied Dixon for third place with his 45th career start in goal. Next up is Tim Moore, who made 50 starts as a goalkeeper for Florida Southern from 1985-88.
  • With seven saves against the Sharks, Clingerman equaled his total from the first three games and they give him 192 in his career, eight behind Kris Pahl (200 from 1982-85) for seventh place on that list.

UP NEXT

  • Florida Southern will be on the road at Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday with a 7 p.m. kickoff. The Sailfish reached the NCAA Division II quarterfinals last year where they lost to eventual national champion Pfeiffer, 5-4. The game against PBA will count in the SSC standings this year.
