Mocs Allow Just 10 Shots to #7 Tampa but Fall 2-1

Box Score

TAMPA – Jacob Ling-Vannerus put Florida Southern on the board with 3:48 remaining, pulling the Moccasins within a goal, but #7 Tampa was able to hold on after that for a 2-1 victory over the Moccasins Wednesday night. With the win Tampa improves to 6-0-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the Sunshine State Conference, while Florida Southern is now 3-3-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the SSC.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Tampa led 1-0 at halftime on a 29th minute goal by Fredinho Mompremier, his seventh of the season. Prior to that goal, the shot totals had been even at three apiece for each team.
  • Lewis Sugden scored for Tampa in the 57th minute to put the Spartans ahead 2-0 after he had assisted their first goal.
  • Ling-Vannerus recorded his third goal of the season for Florida Southern in the 87th minute, but the Mocs were unable to get another shot before the end of the game.
  • The two sides combined for only 15 shots, with Tampa taking 10 and Florida Southern five, and there were only three corner kicks in the game: two for Tampa and one for Florida Southern.
  • Three of Florida Southern's shots were taken by Hassirou Diakite.
  • Cole Clingerman made five saves for the Moccasins and Jake Richards had for Tampa.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Tampa was the first nationally ranked team Florida Southern has played this year, and three more who are currently in the NSCAA top-25 are on the schedule (Barry, Lynn and Florida Tech).
  • Sophomore defender Nick Atwood, who had been playing regularly as a reserve this season, made his first career start on the back line and was part of the unit that held the Spartans to 10 shots.
  • Ling-Vannerus is now tied with Joseph Ammer for the team lead in goals (3) and points (7).

UP NEXT

  • The Moccasins return home for a 7 p.m. match on Saturday against Barry University. The Buccaneers are ranked #11 in the NSCAA national poll.
