Box Score MIAMI SHORES, FL – Benny Yusufoglu kept Florida Southern in the game and Barry off the scoreboard for 100 minutes Wednesday night before a goal by Miles Francis 21 seconds into the second overtime gave the Buccaneers a 1-0 victory. It leaves the two teams still fighting for the final spot in next week's Sunshine State Conference Tournament with one regular season game remaining.
The Moccasins (7-5, 5-4 SSC) can still take that spot with a win against Lynn on Saturday night, or a loss by Barry at Eckerd in a game being played at the same time. That would push the Moccasins into the fifth position in the SSC standings.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Yusufoglu made a season-high nine saves for Florida Southern, many of them at point blank range as Barry held a 21-5 advantage in shots. Three of those came in the first overtime period where the Bucs out-shot the Mocs 4-1.
- Only seconds after the second overtime period began, Jerrel Cato got the ball at the top of the 18-yard box and sent it over to Marcos Nunez. With Francis racing in from the right win, Nunez got him the ball for a shot past Yusufoglu toward the far post for the game-winning goal. It gave Barry (5-5-2, 4-4-1) its fourth straight win, and fifth in the last six games.
- The first scoring chances of the night belonged to Florida Southern on a shot by Rene Rivera two minutes in, and a corner kick at four-minute mark. Barry's first shot came in the 14th minute, followed by another in the 16th, but there was only one more shot by either team the remainder of the first half.
- Both teams then had chances in the first five minutes of the second, neither of which was on target. The Bucs would then force Yusufoglu into the first of his five second-half saves in the 56th minute.
- Barry goalkeeper Bo Haug had to make only one save, stopping Jacob Ling-Vannerus in the 60th minute.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Florida Southern's last four games have all been decided by one goal: a pair of 2-1 wins, and a pair of 1-0 losses.
- The overtime game was the first of the season for Florida Southern, though Barry has played four, tied with Embry-Riddle for the most in the SSC.
- The Moccasins hadn't played a game that was scoreless at the end of regulation since 2012 when they played a non-conference game that ended that way at Eckerd. Their last such SSC game was also at Barry in 2002, a game the Buccaneers won 1-0.
- The last Moccasin goalkeeper with nine saves in a game was current assistant coach Cole Clingerman at Barry in 2015.
