Box Score
WINTER PARK – Rollins used a corner kick in the closing minutes to score the only goal of the night as the Tars picked up a 1-0 win over Florida Southern as the Moccasins returned to action following a lengthy lay-off due to Hurricane Irma.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The shot totals were nearly equal throughout the match, with Rollins (2-3, 1-0 Sunshine State Conference) holding an 18-16 edge over Florida Southern (1-1-1, 0-1), and the two sides were even at eight apiece in the second half. The Tars were able to capitalize though on their next to last shot of the game when Kiera McMeekan scored off a corner kick from Jill Richards. McMeekan was able to put her header from the far side of the 6-yard box back across the front of the goal and into the top right corner of the net for her first goal of the season.
- Florida Southern had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds with a corner kick of its own, but a header by Tatum Albrecht was high, allowing the Tars to escape with the 1-0 win.
- The Moccasins forced Rollins goalkeeper Kelly Rowswell into seven saves, with two of them coming on shots by Anna Griessler and two coming from Leah Borders. It was Borders who tested Rowswell early in the 11th and 18th minutes. Griessler then fired off back-to-back shots in the 42nd minute, with Rowswell stopping both of them to keep the game scoreless at the half.
- The Tars then had to withstand a series of scoring chances by the Moccasins at the start of the second half, with three shots and two corner kicks coming in the first three minutes. Borders had two of those shots as well, and Rachel Peck had another that was on target but corralled by Rowswell.
- Rollins had a chance to score around the 61-minute mark following a free kick, but Shalisa Crowell hit the cross bar on her shot, and Florida Southern goalkeeper Helena Norrstrom followed that by making a save on a shot by Kayla Crosby. It was one of four saves in the game for Norrstrom.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Wednesday night's game was originally scheduled for Auburndale but due to complications there involving Hurricane Irma, the game was moved to Rollins. The Tars have now won 16 of the 17 all-time meetings played in Winter Park, but the 1-0 score on Wednesday was the Mocs' best showing there since 2009 when the two teams met in the SSC Championship Game and the Tars also won 1-0.
- Norrstrom had a personal shutout minutes streak of 284:44, which ranks third in team history behind Sarah Furr (358:10 in 2007) and Martina Tangen Billing (307:38 in 2009)
- The 16 shots taken by Florida Southern were its most against Rollins in at least 20 games dating back to at least the 2003 season.
- Florida Southern has opened the season with more than 16 shots in each of its first three games. The Mocs hadn't started a season with three straight games even in double digits since 2008.
- Four of Rollins' five games this year have been by 1-0 scores: two wins and two losses.
- The Moccasins had not played a game since September 3 at Mount Olive, giving them 17 days between games. That is the longest break Florida Southern has ever had, surpassing one of 15 games in 2004 created by a cancellation, and one by 14 games in September of that same year caused by another hurricane.
- The last time the Mocs had as many as 10 days between games was in October of 2010, which was not caused by any cancellations.
