End-of-Game Heroics by Styron and Albrecht Give Florida Southern 2-1 Overtime Win at Saint Leo in Women's Soccer

Box Score

SAINT LEO, FL – Freshman Tatum Albrecht scored late in the first overtime period after an 89th minute goal by Megan Styron had sent it there as Florida Southern downed Saint Leo 2-1 in women's soccer Saturday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Florida Southern (2-1-1, 1-1 Sunshine State Conference) trailed 1-0 before coming from behind in dramatic fashion behind Styron and Albrecht. Styron hit a one-timer past Saint Leo goalkeeper Julia Ortiz on a play assisted by Chloe Hamm, tying the score at 1-1 with just 1:24 remaining in the second half.
  • The Moccasins owned the only overtime period needed by taking all three of the shots in that period, which ended with 3:07 still on the clock. After Madi Colaw had an earlier shot in overtime saved by Ortiz, she came back four minutes later to assist Albrecht, who scored the winning goal after collecting a loose ball inside the box.
  • Saint Leo (2-3, 1-2) scored its goal in the 28th minute after Victoria Covas took the ball down the left side and found Rosie Young in the middle. Young then fed the ball through a gap in the defense back to Covas who hit her shot to the opposite side of the net to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.
  • That goal was the only blemish on Helena Norrstrom's stat line, with the senior goalkeeper making six saves for the Moccasins. She had three in each half without having to make any in overtime. Ortiz made two saves for Saint Leo, with the Moccasins out-shooting the Lions 12-11.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Albrecht and Styron each scored their first goals of the season, and Florida Southern's five goals this year have come from five different players. That's only one short of the number of players who scored last year for the Moccasins.
  • Styron has scored two goals in her career, both of them on the road in conference games at Barry (last year) and Saint Leo.
  • Prior to Saturday, Florida Southern's last overtime win had been on September 16, 2015, a 3-2 decision over Nova Southeastern. Caroline Evers won that game on a penalty kick.
  • Albrecht is the third freshman in team history whose first career goal was an overtime game-winner. The others are Joanie DeHaven in 2001 (2-1 win vs. Bryant), and Morgan Sammons in 2009 (scoring both goals in a 2-1 win at Franklin Pierce). The last freshman to score a game-winner in overtime was Kristy Legoas in a 2-1 win at Nova Southeastern in 2013. The last freshman to score an overtime goal at all for Florida Southern was Kristy Legoas in a 2-1 win at Nova Southeastern in 2013.
  • The Mocs have allowed only two goals through the first four games, nearly matching the 2014 Moccasins who gave up only one through the first four games that year. Dating back to last year, Florida Southern has not allowed more than one goal in seven consecutive games, their longest such streak since nine in a row during the 2011 season.
  • Saint Leo leads the all-time series 12-9-2, and the teams are now 2-2-2 against each other in overtime games. Saturday night's game was the third straight in the series decided by one goal, with Saint Leo winning the other two, 3-2. The Mocs' last win on the Lions' home field was in 2009 by the score of 4-1, which had been their only win at Saint Leo prior to Saturday,
