Box Score LAKELAND, Fla. - Florida Southern College women's soccer earned its first Sunshine State Conference victory of 2019 with a 1-0 win over Eckerd College on Wednesday night. Senior
Alexa Moberley made her senior night one to remember as she put the Mocs (4-5-2, 1-3-2 SSC) up 1-0 in the 66th minute over the visiting Tritons (5-6-1, 1-5-1 SSC).
Prior to tonight's contest with the Tritons, the Mocs honored their four seniors with a pregame ceremony. Florida Southern would celebrate the careers of seniors,
Caitlin Quaempts,
Kaitlyn Svopa,
Elanee Otto, and Moberley.
HOW IT HAPPENED
● Florida Southern came out hot in the first half as Moberley fired off the first shot of the night in the fourth minute as Casey Winn made her only save of the first 45 minutes. Eckerd countered with a shot just off target by Hajar Benjoud in the fifth minute. Makenzie Maggio would send a ball to the top of the goal as Jenny Staten made the leap for her only save on the evening in the 18th minute.
● Moberley opened the second half with her second shot on the night as she sent a ball out over the top right of the goal. After an offside call on the visitors,
Rachel Peck sent a ball to the top of the goal only to see Winn jump up and push the ball over the net. Victoria Grant nearly broke a scoreless tie as she fired a shot off the crossbar in the 56th minute. In the 60th minute, Peck sent a rocket of a shot to the bottom left of the goal only to see Winn make her third save of the half. Florida Southern would keep the pressure on the Eckerd defense as
Cali Larson took a shot on goal that Winn collected to make her final save of the night.
● In the 66th minute, Moberley bested the Tritons defense and snuck a ball past Winn to give the Mocs a 1-0 advantage and her first goal of the season.
Hailey Surrency looked to give the Mocs a bit of breathing room but was denied as Winn made her fifth save of the night in the 83rd minute.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
● The Mocs defense has helped keep the opposition to single-digit shots as Staten needed to make just one save on the evening to get the victory.
● For the fifth time, this season the Mocs have held the opposition to single-digit shots.
● Florida Southern outshot Eckerd, 10-4, including a 9-1 shot advantage in the second half.
● The Mocs totaled four corner kicks to three by the Tritons.
● With another shutout on the season, Staten now sits in a tie for fifth all-time with five career clean sheets.
● The Moccasins are now 15-12 all-time against the Tritons, including an 8-6 mark in Lakeland.
UP NEXT
Florida Southern will host Barry (Oct. 23) on Saturday, this game was postponed due to weather on October 19th. The Mocs will close out the regular season with matches at Embry-Riddle (Oct. 30) and Saint Leo (Nov. 2). Florida Southern and Tampa will make up the postponed match from the beginning of the month in Tampa on Nov. 6th.
