Mocs Rally Past Lindenwood in Overtime as Hanson Nets Career-High

Box Score

LAKELAND, Fla. - Brett Hanson poured in a career-high 42 points as Florida Southern College men's basketball overcame a double-digit deficit to top Lindenwood, 98-96, on Saturday evening at Streamline Sale Arena at Jenkins Field House. The No. 22 Moccasins (8-1) trailed the Lions (3-3) by two points with 23 seconds to play in regulation, but Jalyn Hinton was fouled with six seconds left and hit a pair of clutch free-throws to send the game to overtime.

The Mocs would outscore Lindenwood 12-10 in the extra period, overcoming a one-point deficit (96-95) by hitting three free throws in the final 1:13 of the game to pull out the win. Hanson's 42 points are the most by any Moccasin since Jonathan Lawton also scored 42 against Lynn on Jan. 5, 2019.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Florida Southern started flat as it scored just three points in the opening three minutes of action to give the Lions an 11-point lead (14-3) with 16:32 to go in the first half. Lindenwood would hang on to its lead until the 7:52 mark of the opening period when the Moccasins took their first lead (24-23) on Hanson's layup.
  • The Mocs' first lead came thanks to a 21-9 run over a nearly nine-minute period. During the scoring run, Lindenwood went through a stretch in which it did not score for almost three minutes. Florida Southern fell behind by eight (36-28) with 2:07 to go but was able to slice the deficit in half before the break and went into the locker room trailing 38-34.
  • Down by six (45-39) early in the second half, Southern mounted an 11-3 run to take a two-point lead (50-48) on Hanson's free throw with 13:14 left to play. The teams would trade blows over the next several minutes, with Florida Southern going up by three on several occasions. Tied at 68-68 with 6:15 on the clock, the Lions went on an 8-0 run to take a 76-68 lead at the 3:33 mark.
  • The Mocs clawed their way back to tie things at 84-84 on Hanson's three-pointer with 23 seconds to go, but the Lion hit a pair of free throws after Florida Southern intentionally fouled on the next possession to go up 86-84. After Jack Rauch missed the go-ahead three-pointer with eight seconds to go, Hinton corralled the offensive rebound, got fouled, and hit both free throws with 1.1 seconds left to send the game to overtime.
  • In the extra period, the teams traded the lead six times in the first four minutes before Hanson hit two free throws with 21 seconds remaining to make it 97-96. Xavier Rhodes came up with a huge defensive rebound on the Anthony Christian's would-be, go-ahead layup with seven seconds left, and hit one free throw to make it a 98-96 final.
  • The Mocs shot 41.8 percent (33-of-79) from the floor, including a 27-of-34 mark at the charity stripe. In addition to Hanson's 42 points, Brandon Carroll (18), Jack Rauch (12), and Jair Rodgers (10) also scored in double figures. Rauch tied a career-high with 16 rebounds as the Moccasins outrebounded the Lions 60-46. In addition to his 42 points, Hanson added eight rebounds and five assists. Jalyn Hinton chipped in with six points and 13 boards.
