Box Score WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Florida Southern College men's soccer team played to a 2-2 tie on Wednesday night, in a Sunshine State Conference match played at host Rollins College.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Florida Southern scored the game's first goal in the 32nd minute, as junior James Meehan came streaking down the right side, forcing the Rollins keeper off his line. Meehan slid a gentle pass across to senior Jacob Ling-Vannerus who had a wide open net in front of him.
- The second half saw Ling-Vannerus net his third goal in the last two games, as he gathered a loose ball near the center circle, and outran the young Rollins defense, and beat the keeper in a 1v1 situation in the 56th minute.
- The Tars refused to yield, and three minutes later scored on a 20-yard strike from outside the box to cut the lead to 2-1.
- In the 64th minute, Rollins found the equalizer on a set piece, knotting the score at two apiece.
- The match got more physical, as fouls and cramps accumulated on both sides.
- Late in the second half, the Mocs defense strengthened, with senior Foster Appiah blocking and deflecting several Tars shots.
- Making his first ever start for the Mocs, true freshman AJ Pearce made his second save of the match in the 96th minute.
- In the first overtime session, Rollins had an opportunity in the 91st minute, but could not connect.
- A minute later, the Mocs had their third corner kick of the match, but could not convert.
- In the 98th minute, Ling-Vannerus took a through ball and had a 1v1 with the Rollins keeper, who made a game-saving diving save.
- Meehan had a great opportunity in the 104th minute, but was stymied by the Rollins keeper.
- A Rollins header went just a tad high in the 106th minute.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Three of the six matches played so far for the Mocs have one into overtime. Southern has now played to three ties in those games.
- Florida Southern is now 0-1-2 on the road this season, and 0-0-2 in the Sunshine State Conference.
- This is the third time this season that FSC has scored two goals in a game.
- Pearce made two saves on the evening, playing the entire 110 minutes.
- Ling-Vannerus now has three goals on the season. He had scored just nine goals in his first three seasons combined.
- Meehan found his first point on the season, earning an assist on FSC's first goal.
