Box Score 2 ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Florida Southern College softball was shutout in game one of a doubleheader at Flagler on Wednesday night. The Moccasins (5-7) saw a late-inning lead slip away as the Flagler (10-4) walked it off in the ninth inning.
HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1: Flagler 6, Florida Southern 0
- Lindsey Wilson reached first on a strikeout swinging in the top of the first for the only base runner for the Mocs in the top of the first. The Saints capitalized on an error by the Mocs to score the eventual game-winning run with one out in the bottom of the first.
- With one out sophomore Celia Higgins would reach on-field error by the Saints shortstop and would steal second to advance to scoring position. The bats would strand her on second as freshman Kelsey Peck popped out to second and sophomore Beka Schulte grounded out to third to end the inning.
- Flagler's bats came alive in the second inning as they got tacked on three more runs on five hits as the Mocs committed a throwing error.
- The top of the third inning looked promising for the Mocs as Jadin Dewith led off with a walk and Jessica Bryson moved her up on an infield single to the shortstop. Wilson came up to bat with two on and no out. With a 1-0 count, she sent a rocket at the third baseman who caught the ball and threw it around the diamond, second to first for three quick outs on one swing of the bat.
- Flagler added another run in the bottom of the third on a two-out double to left field to drive in the runner from first base. Through three innings the home team would lead 5-0.
- Southern would pick up two more hits in the top of the fifth but would be unable to bring home the runners.
- After putting up a zero in the bottom of the sixth inning, Maddi Conner opened the final frame with a leadoff single to left field but the next three batters would all strikeout to close out the game.
GAME 2: Flagler 9, Florida Southern 8 - 9 innings
- Bryson opened the game with a single down the leftfield line and would advance to second on a ground out by Wilson. With two outs Kensie Green would move Bryson over to third as she sent a base hit to the right field. The Mocs would get their first run of the day as Bryson stole home and Green stole second. With Green in scoring position, Conner would send a ball to centerfield to drive in Green from second. That would be all the Mocs would get as Higgins grounded out to shortstop to end the threat.
- Jenna Weldon walked the first two Saints batters to open the bottom of the first. She would get the third batter to strike out swinging for the first out. A one-out double drove in the first run for the Saints. Flagler followed that up with a fielder's choice and packaged with an error by the Mocs the home team was able to make it a 3-2 advantage in their favor. Weldon would settle down and get the next two batters out on a strikeout swinging and a pop out to the infield.
- Southern would strand a runner at third in the top of the third inning. Kyleigh Taylor would send the 1-1 pitch with one out over the fence in right-centerfield to double the Flagler lead, 4-2.
- The Mocs would load the bases with one out in the top of the fourth inning. After a strikeout by Bryson, Wilson would take her base on the ninth pitch to drive in the third run for the Mocs. In a similar fashion as the first inning, the home team responded in the bottom half of the inning as the Saints strung together a back to back two-out singles to once again double their lead, 6-3.
- After a quiet fifth inning, Southern rallied with two outs to tie the game at 6-6 in the top of the sixth inning. Wilson singled through the left side to drive in Schulte from third. Meghan Sexton sent a 1-0 pitch over the right-center field fence tie the game at 6-6. Cowart would put a much-needed zero on the board.
- Higgins led off the top of the seventh inning with a base hit through the left side. Flagler would make a pitching change and Peck would greet the new pitcher with a base hit to centerfield. The next batter, Schulte would fly out to rightfield and on an error by the right fielder Peck would move up to second and Higgins would cross the plate for the Mocs seventh run of the game and a 7-6 FSC lead. With runners on second and third Bryson would tack on another hit as she drove in Peck to make it 8-6 Moccasins.
- Flagler would tie the game with a two-run homer over the right-center field fence to notch the game at 8-8. Beacham would refocus and strike the next two batters out swinging and get the final out on a pop up to shortstop.
- Southern made some noise in the top of the eighth inning as Green led off the inning reaching on an error by the third baseman. She would advance to third on a throwing error by the third baseman as Conner reached on a fielder's choice. The Flagler pitching would tame the Mocs hitters as Higgins and Peck struck out swinging and Schulte flew out to left field to end the top half of the eighth inning. Beacham would send the Saints down in order in the bottom of the eighth to send it to the ninth inning.
- With one out in the top of the ninth, Bryson walked and Wilson hit an infield single to advance the runner. Sexton would lineout on a 2-2 count and then Green would go down swinging to end the threat.
- The Saints' Taylor would lead off the bottom of the ninth with a base hit to left-center and then would be relieved for a pinch-runner. Beacham would strike out the next batter swinging but on the runner would advance to second on the wild pitch. With a 1-0 count and one out, Murphy would put the ball through the left side to drive in Zoe Mooney from second. The Saints would walk it off in the bottom of the ninth to take both ends of the doubleheader.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The triple-play in the first game was the first the Moccasins had been involved in since 2006 game vs. Webber.
