Box Score FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Florida Southern College softball team suffered a 3-2 loss at Nova Southeastern on Friday night, in Game One of the three-game series. The final two games will be played tomorrow, Saturday, February 29, at NSU.
The Mocs (7-8, 0-4 SSC) scored both runs in the first inning, while allowing single runs in the second, fifth, and sixth innings to the Sharks (10-9, 1-6 SSC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Mocs jumped out in the top of the first inning, as freshman left fielder Jessica Bryson walked to lead off the game, before being forced out on a fielder's choice by senior right fielder Alex Mace.
- Mace then advanced to second on a one-out single by senior third baseman Meghan Sexton.
- Catcher Kensie Green then stepped to the plate, and the junior singled through the right side, driving Mace home with the game's first run.
- Later, with two outs, sophomore second baseman Celia Higgins reached on a fielder's choice, which sent Sexton scrambling home with Southern's second run.
- Senior pitcher Kristen Beacham ran into trouble briefly in the second inning, allowing a bunt single then a triple to right, as NSU scored their first run.
- In the Florida Southern third inning, the Mocs had the bases loaded with only one out, but could not scrape a run across the plate.
- Again, in the fourth inning, Southern had a great opportunity to score. A walk, a bunt single, and a hit by pitch loaded the bases with no outs. But a strikeout and double play ended the threat.
- Beacham cruised through the middle innings in the circle, until the fifth, when she allowed a trio of two-out singles, as the Sharks scored their second run of the game.
- In the home half of the sixth, NSU took advantage of a one-out walk, then sacrificed the runner to second. With two outs, a double to deep right scored the eventual game-winning run.
- In the top of the seventh, the Mocs had a runner on second, but could not capitalize.
