Box Score LAKELAND, Fla. – Florida Southern College baseball fell in the series opener to Barry University on Friday night, dropping a 13-7 contest at Feinbloom Field. The No. 18 Moccasins (9-5, 1-3 SSC) hit four long balls but 12 runs for the Buccaneers (10-2, 2-2 SSC) in the sixth and seventh innings gave the home side a large buffer.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Both sides dominated pitching early, as no team earned more than one hit in an inning until the top of the sixth.
- The Moccasins went up 2-0 in the sixth inning as Jacob Teter singled and Zach Scott homered to center field.
- The Bucs scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth. A solo homer was followed by two walks, with a single scoring one and a homer scoring three.
- Barry tallied up seven more runs on five hits and three errors in the bottom of the seventh. Two singles led off the frame, and a fielding error and two more singles scored three more runs. A walk loaded the bases and a hit by pitch scored another and an error and wild pitch brought in the remaining three runs.
- The Mocs got back on track, trailing 12-2, in the eighth inning. With two outs, Zach Diewert reached on a fielding error and Burnsed faced down a hit by a pitch that brought up Christian Maglich, who launched a rocket to center field to bring the game to 12-5. Vaun Brown launched another bomb to center right after to put the game at 12-6.
- Barry scored one more in the bottom of the inning on a Perez double that brought in Baldo.
- Teter homered to right field to put the game at 13-7, but the Moccasins were unable to close the gap. Frank Gonzalez II earned his fourth win of the season while Logan Verrino took the loss for the Mocs.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Burnsed, Maglich, and Brown, who all homered in the 5-3 win over Tampa last Saturday, hit home runs against Barry. Teter joined the fray, making it the fifth time this season that the Moccasins have hit at least four homers in a game.
- Burnsed was hit by a pitch for the eighth time this season. He is currently averaging 0.57 HBP a game, which would put him at 28 for the season if the trend continued. That number would put him one above John Thresher, who was hit by 27 pitches in the 1998 season.
- The Mocs have hit a nation-leading 29 home runs this season. At just over two per game, the Mocs would finish 2020 with a program-high 101 homers for the season if the pace was kept.
UP NEXT:
Florida Southern will play in a doubleheader on Saturday at Miami Shores to conclude the series against Barry. Tomorrow's first game will start at 1 p.m. at Feinbloom Field.
