Box Score 2 MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - Florida Southern College baseball split a Saturday doubleheader at Feinbloom Field against Barry University as the Moccasins fell 13-2 in game one but rebounded with a 4-2 victory in game two. The No. 18 Moccasins (10-6, 2-4 SSC) tallied 13 hits in the second game against the Buccaneers (11-3, 3-3 SSC).
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE:
- Barry put up three quickly in the first inning, with a single from Matos with runners in scoring bringing home one, a groundout to short getting another, and a fielding error putting the game at 3-0 for the Bucs.
- The Mocs brought back two in the third inning as Dylan Costa scored on a Ricky Gonzalez single and a Zach Scott double bringing home Gonzalez.
- The Bucs responded in the bottom frame with a Fernandez two-RBI single.
- Four more came across the plate for the home side in the fourth, as Cabrera and Diaz hit two-run long balls.
- Cabrera hit his second-straight two-run homer in the fifth inning.
- With two out in the seventh, Barry made it 12-2 as Matos singled through the right side to score Escala.
- Vaun Brown made his pitching debut for the Moccasins in the eighth inning. The senior only allowed five batters to the plate, earning a flyout, popout and groundout. Brito scored for the Bucs on a throwing error at short.
- The Moccasins were unable to rally in the ninth as the Bucs took game one, 13-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO:
- The Moccasins loaded the bases in the first inning but a flyout got the Buccaneers out of the inning. The Mocs did not have to wait long to go ahead, though, as a Costa double scored Tor Sehnert.
- Southern added two more in the top of the third. Singles by Jacob Teter and Zach Diewert put runners on base for Christian Maglich to loop a hit to center to score Teter. Sehnert's second double of the game brought Diewert home.
- The 3-0 FSC lead shrunk to one in the bottom of the fourth as Barry scored two. A hit by pitch scored one Buc with the bases load and a sacrifice fly brought in one more.
- The Mocs earned one more in the seventh with two out. Back-to-back doubles from Alan Burnsed and Maglich put the game at 4-2.
- Barry had two chances in the eighth and ninth innings to score but was unable to execute. In the eighth, a single and walk with one out threatened, but the Mocs got out after strikeout and a fielder's choice. Another walk and single in the ninth put runners on, but a flyout and ground out ended the game and prevented the series sweep.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- The Mocs allowed just four hits in game two.
- Michael DeSanti improved to 3-0 and Thomas Spinelli earned his fourth save of the year in game two.
- Six of the nine Moccasins in the lineup had two hits in game two.
UP NEXT:
The Moccasins will play six-straight home games in the next 10 days at Henley Field. Saginaw Valley (March 3) and Kentucky Wesleyan (March 4) launch the homestand before a three-game series against Northwood (March 6-8). Southern's homestand concludes on March 10 against Winona State.
